I received THE GLORY OF THEIR TIMES for Christmas 1966 from my parents. Of all the individuals written about, the most enthralling chapter to me was that of Smoky Joe Wood.
When I attended my first major card collectors convention, at Troy, Michigan in the summer of 1972, TCMA's Mike Aronstein was there with some of his high quality, but always detectable as such, reprints. Honestly, it was a genuine thrill to buy his reprint of Joe Wood's 1915 Cracker Jack card. I fully realize youse guys hate reprints, but back in 1972, this was a joyous acquisition. Still enjoying that one to this day..... ---Brian Powell |

Some really nice items shown above, here's a couple items from my collection including a letter I received from Joe in response to an autograph request circa 1970, a team postcard sent from Joe to his mother and a RPPC portrait of Joe.

I think James Franco is a Smoky Joe look-a-like...

YES! I've been saying this for years. I'd love to see a comedy where he's smoky joe, barnstorming with the bloomer girls

A baseball movie where James Franco plays Smoky Joe and Tom Felton plays Ty Cobb. Would be epic!

Jim, that index card is off the charts! I have corresponded through the mail several times with football great Gino Cappelletti, and the 2 index card notes he sent me are among my favorite items in my collection.

This pose was used on a lot of his cards, but this W572 card may be 1 of 1 as there are no known graded examples, and appears on the want list of every major collector of this set that I know.

Killer stuff, Jim. Love the Joe Wood note to his mom. I can picture his brother pointing out all of the other folks to her.
