Show your Smoky Joe Wood cards!
Admittedly I'm doing this for selfish reasons because I'm on the hunt for a card of Joe Wood and would love to see the options out there.
Maybe it's the stories about how he used to barnstorm with an all women's team. But there's something mystical about the guy. I put him up there with Satchel Paige and Gehrig and other guys whose legend is a cut above. You know, mystical level, coming out of the fog, fading into the cornfields... Show any or all you have related to Joe Wood. The more obscure, the better! |

Probably not much more than a handful of these floating around....I'd be surprised if they totaled double digits

Wood is my second favorite pitcher, behind Walter Johnson. This is his Underwood & Underwood postcard. I am sure that there are others out there, but I have never seen another.

Very nice Kevin.

My CJ and a postcard of his brother Pete that he sent to his cousin.

I have to put in a plug for Lot#904, which is my consignment in the current Goldin Auction. The lot is 3 E120's: Baker SGC vg/ex, Heilman PSA vg/ex+ and WOOD PSA 5 (really nice card). The current bid is $400 and the auction ends in 2 days. Incidentally, I think Goldin's auction software and optics is minor league compared to, say, Heritage.

Amazing stuff there David!
|
Wow, cool painting!
|
That photo of him in 1962 with Carrigan does not look like a man who would live 23 more years.
And that Kreindler is probably my favorite painting of his, right up there with the Matty. |
Wow guys, just amazing, amazing stuff! That colon photo is super cool, David that painting is perfect

Hard to find anything which hasn't been posted yet - here's all I can add at this point. Awesome stuff to see in this thread!

I guess everybody knows the story of how Tris Speaker, then manager of Cleveland in the early 1920's, persuaded his management to offer Joe Wood, his old teammate from Boston days who had long ago blown out his arm, a job in the outfield; hence, some late cards of him, like my E120, show him in a fielding position with a Cleveland caption. To me, it is a great story of loyalty.

In the movie "Field of Dreams" when Ray, Terrance, and a young Archie Graham return to the field in Iowa. Doesn't Archie say "There's Smoky Joe Wood"?
Love the cards and pictures! Larry |

I know these baseball cards aren't pre-war but they're still smokin' cool.
"Baseball is all I ever wanted. I could eat, sleep, and dream baseball." - Smoky Joe Wood "Can I throw harder than Joe Wood? Listen mister, no man alive can throw any harder than Smoky Joe Wood." - Walter Johnson Field Of Dreams Archie Graham: "Hey, that's Smoky Joe Wood. And Mel Ott. And Gil Hodges!" Shoeless Joe Jackson: "Ty Cobb wanted to play, but none of us could stand the son-of-a-bitch when we were alive, so we told him to stick it!" <p> |

I got this card from Joe's son Bob about 20 years ago. |
I believe the consensus in the end was that it was NOT Joe Wood in these photos. But an interesting discussion none the less, regarding some Bloomer Girls photos, f.w.i.w.

Awesome stuff guys. I really like those Sporting Life cards. Here's a couple of mine. First is Joe as a mascot with the Ouray, Colorado team. He's the little kid in the white. Plus Joe, with the Ness City, Kansas team, seated lower right.

Definitely not as scarce as others shown here, but love these cards in that they pair him with his buddy Tris Speaker. Great back bios too.

I thought this might be the place to post this.
I was digging through some Type I pictures my dad has of some Cleveland Indians and i found this one. It was in with a bunch of other ones with other men. Looks to be of a hunting trip after the 1920 WS with Smoky Joe Wood having a good time on the hunting trip. I have a bunch of other ones that i will definitely be keeping of the whole hunting party. I found a link to a mention of the trip:https://books.google.com/books?id=hW...unting&f=false Is this Joe Wood? Because it sure looks like him from all the other pictures and cards you all have posted. Andy |

That's awesome. I have family in Ness City and always loved the connection, but have never owned a Wood. It might be time to pick one up. Great thread! |

For me the D381 portrait and M116 portrait are my faves but not by much over a few others. And of course Graigs picture is off the charts cool....

I received THE GLORY OF THEIR TIMES for Christmas 1966 from my parents. Of all the individuals written about, the most enthralling chapter to me was that of Smoky Joe Wood.
When I attended my first major card collectors convention, at Troy, Michigan in the summer of 1972, TCMA's Mike Aronstein was there with some of his high quality, but always detectable as such, reprints. Honestly, it was a genuine thrill to buy his reprint of Joe Wood's 1915 Cracker Jack card. I fully realize youse guys hate reprints, but back in 1972, this was a joyous acquisition. Still enjoying that one to this day..... ---Brian Powell |

Some really nice items shown above, here's a couple items from my collection including a letter I received from Joe in response to an autograph request circa 1970, a team postcard sent from Joe to his mother and a RPPC portrait of Joe.
