I tried twice without cracking, a bvg 7.5 68 ryan, tried to cross to a psa 7, no luck, and an sgc 4, tried for a psa 4. I did not crack either beforehand. 0 for 2 if you're keeping score.

In my very limited experience, you need to bust them out. It almost a "they said this, what do you say" thing.

I agree. Also, the PSA grader is probably instructed to be hyper-convinced the card will meet their grading criteria before busting the card out of the non-PSA holder. Not great for the customer, although crossover attempt may still make sense in certain cases e.g. card is of such high value that crack-and-submit is a too big of a risk to take.

I recently cracked out 20 "old" GAI T206s and submitted them to SGC.
Several with minor paper loss on the back had been overgraded and they did receive lower grades, which I expected. All of them were encapsulated and received number grades. Apart from the paper loss group, they crossed fairly well with a few marginally higher, a few the same and a few marginally lower. I was not pleasantly surprised, except for the fact that all were graded. When the time comes to sell, they will do better in he SGC holder than with the GAI label, despite the overall grade reduction. I am a believer in cracking before submitting.

I have seen the Youtube videos on cracking BVG and PSA. Does anyone have tips on cracking GAI and ASA?

I recently tried crossing a PSA 4 vg ex over to SGC and the cards came nack Authentic. No explanation so I need to call. How can a PSA gaded 4 only get Authentic from SGC? Not a big deal as it was not a high dollar card, but send a justification for why as I am a little skeptica lon this one.

A couple months ago I submitted two SGC graded 1954 Red Heart cards to PSA for crossover. Both crossed to the same grade, an 8 and a 9.
