Thanks to a Net 54 member for an extremely tough E91A. Need 3 more to complete the set...the ever elusive Slagle and Tenney, and the relatively expensive Matthewson.

Thanks Todd I know this card is not on everyone's want list But after the Sports collectors Bible came out I made up a Ruth and Gehrig Checklist and from them had a small list of cards that I told myself I would buy (if I could afford them) If I ever came across them. Like R301 Gehrig R304 Ruth / Gehrig Ruth Fleer back stamp.. of Course Baltimore Ruth.. and this one that just fell in my lap totally out of the blue and after 35 plus years crossed it off.

Jonathan, I gasped when I saw your fantastic Wool's Bread pickups - truly rare cards! Congrats - I can imagine the euphoria you felt when you got the Ruth card. I can still remember the excitement I experienced many years ago when I picked up a WaJo with the Wool's back, which wasn't yet reflected in the Standard Catalog, for my WaJo card collection.

Val Thanks it was the best Card pickup I have had in some time.
Back in the day it seemed every weekend I went to a show or flea Market I saw or bought something that sparked my collector engine and it happened so often that I took it for granted. Turning over a page of T206's in Silver spring MD and seeing all the cards had Red Hindu backs ( I left all the commons and just took the two HOF's including a WAJO) because the next table or the next show I was going to have the chance to get my grubby little baseball collecting hands on something bigger and better. Like all good things it came to pass Changed but overall still a mass of collectors trading collecting hunting enjoying our time with these small pieces of paper. And I know most folks look at that Ruth and say so what but sitting in my office staring at that card I looked down and my hand was shaking like you I gasped. Really scary part was that there were two days left in auction..TWO VERY LONG DAYS...and each night I went to bed I felt like I was sped off to the Never land populated with Baseball hero's (And none bigger than Babe Ruth). And all is well that end's well. I got a real shot of collecting adrenaline and a great card, both I will treasure for a time. |

Cobb
This came yesterday, one of Holy Grails that I have wanted for a Loooooooooooong time. Love the caramel stains meaning it was pulled from a box, not sent away for or soaked and bleached

I recently bought a beautifully framed October 10 1910 The Cleveland Leader newspaper highlighting Lajoie beating out Cobb for the batting title in 1910. There was a book written about this titled The Chalmers Race, which I just picked up also. I already had a green Cobb so I had to get a Lajoie portrait to go with.
This portrait ranks up there with the WaJo portrait IMHO; but you have to find the right one...without lipstick. |

Just filled a big hole in my collection
1936 Goudey Premium.
And a fellow Net54 member just helped me to fill my R312 DiMaggio hole...AND I just made a deal for a Joe D. owned bat from the old timers game in 1971. My February has been EPIC for my DiMaggio collection!!!!!!! On a related note, I hope my girlfriend doesn't read these threads. Because I am not sure my DiMaggio bat will look quite as good on the doghouse wall. |
