Thanks for the scans. At least they put "Hand Cut" on it. I would prefer it to say "Hand Cut Clipping"....but that is probably a pipe dream. As long as folks know what they are buying, and it's advertised honestly, then so be it. No issue here. As said before, it's the lack of transparency and BS that doesn't make some auctions smell good.

There are many things about third party grading I don't like, but I can't think of anything more objectionable than that slabbed Nolan Ryan newspaper cut. It makes the Ty Cobb look like a rare artifact in comparison.

Shame on a grading service (assuming they have any shame) for actually slabbing a cutout from a newspaper. I don't care what the label reads or how much transparency there is, it still sucks.

Oh wait, there was a ten dollar bill in it for them. Now I see why they did it.

I don't blame them for taking the $10 bill if someone, with full information, wants to give it to them. That's business. No issue at all...as a matter of fact, they should be congratulated, imo. That there is capitalism hard at work. (sarcasm intended)

Leon,
I hear that these babies are now going to be slabbed! Ah capitalism at its best!

I know Al, I know. When I said what I did I knew it would raise some ire. I have mixed feelings about the whole cut outs thing. Probably not the best for the hobby but who is to say? Again, as long whatever is being done is very open and transparent, and not against the law, I don't really care that much. There are too many other things to worry about, to worry about this .

There are several things to consider here for me:

1. Does the prospect of novice collectors getting ripped off bother the hobby enough to take a real stand on some sort of real grading by-laws or legislation which would probably raise prices and lead to its own unintended consequences

2. What does merit grading and where does a line get drawn

3. Who should decide the answers to 1 & 2

IMO The Cobb is less ridiculous than the Ryan, but both are bad

Default Well...

At least we aren't getting so lathered up about a comic book...now, that would be a waste of time, huh?

Is it that much different from the Oklahoma Today Mantle which is a cutout from a magazine page?
