He has been made aware by several people from net54 that this is cut out and not a card. I think Leon posted a thread about this one the other day. The seller knows it's not a card.
I have reported the listing. Ebay doesn't seem to care as long as they get their cut. |

Actually,
If the winning bidder pays for the item then it has been shown to be worth $220 with over 800 views and lots of bids. Pretty simple really. Lots of grumbling but nothing will be done by Ebay and we all know it. Good try anyway by all. Caveat Emptor. Peace, mik ![]() Last edited by vthobby; 08-21-2014 at 07:44 PM. |

Yet, other pieces of cardboard are "worth" 5, 6, 7 figures. Says who?
If the buyer or whoever thinks something is "worth" whatever.....then it is, to them. As the previous poster said....caveat emptor.

I don't believe this grading company is mainstream and have never seen anything they have authenticated/slabbed before. Who are they and is this TPG legit?

This "grading" company doesn't appear to be in business. Actually, you can buy their domain since it is available. psvagraders.com

But the label is virtually the same down to the style and everything. With the exception of one letter. I wonder if that is the same company with a name change?

Instead of blaming the seller (who I agree should catch some shrapnel as his response to the "question" is pretty ignorant) why don't we also blame the person or people who buy this stuff?
Due-dilligance really isn't that difficult what with all the research that had gone into card collection. You wanna pay three-figures for something that was cut out of a book? Fine. Same with someone who spends $800.00 on a bottle of wine or an autograph or even just s simple cardboard baseball card.... To some this is "collectible" and obviously they have the income to spend on it. I've been quite active on another board and people there all the time question why others collect what they do or why they would want a certain piece because it doesn't fit "their idea" of what's collectible. Who cares??? Was the guy misleading in his post or just completely ignorant? Who knows but, as with Ebay, someone will buy it and pay stupidly. |

These things pop up fairly frequently and are somewhat annoying, since it is distressing to think someone is going through old Spalding guides with a pair of scissors and then calling them "cards." I bought this one recently, with full knowledge of what it was and what it was worth, simply because it was my relative. http://www.ebay.com/itm/351129736021...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
At least the seller's description was quite clear about what it was. |

I have said this before, and noone has acknowledged I even said anything, so I will say it again. PSA graded a NEWSPAPER CLIPPING from a Sporting News of Nolan Ryan. It was graded high and sold for big money in one of the legitimate big time auction houses. Does that get a pass just because the grading leader graded it???? It is still a newspaper cutout!!!! No different than what that seller was selling! Yet, the seller is getting blasted here and nothing is being said about the Nolan Ryan clipping, which is now part of the PSA Nolan Ryan Master Registry!!!

Thanks for the scans. At least they put "Hand Cut" on it. I would prefer it to say "Hand Cut Clipping"....but that is probably a pipe dream. As long as folks know what they are buying, and it's advertised honestly, then so be it. No issue here. As said before, it's the lack of transparency and BS that doesn't make some auctions smell good.

There are many things about third party grading I don't like, but I can't think of anything more objectionable than that slabbed Nolan Ryan newspaper cut. It makes the Ty Cobb look like a rare artifact in comparison.
Shame on a grading service (assuming they have any shame) for actually slabbing a cutout from a newspaper. I don't care what the label reads or how much transparency there is, it still sucks. Oh wait, there was a ten dollar bill in it for them. Now I see why they did it. |

There are several things to consider here for me:
1. Does the prospect of novice collectors getting ripped off bother the hobby enough to take a real stand on some sort of real grading by-laws or legislation which would probably raise prices and lead to its own unintended consequences 2. What does merit grading and where does a line get drawn 3. Who should decide the answers to 1 & 2 IMO The Cobb is less ridiculous than the Ryan, but both are bad |

Not "rare" or a "card" by my definition. That being said.......It is also not a fantasy piece because it's from a period publication. I believe it has value and could be worth $5-20 bucks. I'd pay $5 just for a display if I collected the subject. Buyers have to educate themselves at the end of the day.
