I thought about bidding late on the Maris ball but decided against it because I had just gotten a rookie era Maris Indians signed postcard.
Congrats on these two. Tom C |

According to this NY Times article, he had it legally changed in 1955...
Roger Eugene Maris was born in Hibbing, Minn., on Sept. 10, 1934, but was still an infant when his family moved to Fargo. N.D. The family name was Maras, but he changed it legally in 1955 to Maris. http://www.nytimes.com/learning/gene...bday/0910.html

Speaking of Zimmerman, here is a Bob Dylan autograph I picked up last week during a trip through the southern part of the country (shameless plug as it is for sale in the BST :-) )

Roger decided to change his family name from Maras to Maris. Why? It seems that Roger was already experiencing unpleasantness from the sometimes fickle fans. Roger changed his last name so that he would not have to endure the unflattering chants from some who sat in the stands bent on rhyming his "Maras" name inappropriately. As Sister Ewals noted, he was sensitive . . . but he was still steady and focused.
I'm not sure what you could rhyme with Maras and not Maris...
