I just remembered where I've seen plain balls like that in silver from the 19th cent - the Chinese silver hand balls for exercising your hand. Can come silver plated, or can have plated in antique silver, and engrave.

Got my 5 Giancarlo Stanton game used bats today. Unfortunately, the game used section is currently down for now, so I figured I'd post these here.

I'm sure some of these were used for a HR, just haven't had the chance to check.

The Game-used section is now gone (and is assimilated into here). So you posted in the right place

Great Bats... are you keeping all 5 Giancarlo Bats, or do you buy for resale?

Thank you! Nope, I usually buy to keep. I think I have 4 others, so 9 total of his. All authenticated, all the same brand except for 1, which is an LS and photomatched.

Tell them what? Not to out auctions? Why did you post the trophy ball in the pick up thread? Is there something I missed?

Antioch College team. Purportedly the first team to play Cincinnati on 1869, although there is some debate. Great pose and great period notations.

Thanks, George.
I just noticed that the writing on the reverse is not all in the same hand. Is it possible each player signed his own name, hometown, and position? That would be a first for me.

All 4 game used bats have been signed:

1994 Rawlings Edgar Martinez game used bat
Pudge Rodriguez game used bat
1986-89 Ivan Calderon game used bat (dec'd)
1965-68 John Felske game used bat. - Tough 1968 Cubs bat for that person looking to get a player that only played in 4 games that year.

Super-happy with this. According the prevailing knowledge, Hanna TA Models were gamers only, and the weight on the knob cements it. Surprised the bat guys let me win this!

Default 1938 All Star game art print featuring Johnny Vander Meer and Bob Feller

I just picked up an obscure original 1938 All Star game art print featuring Reds' lefty hurler Johnny Vander Meer and the Indians' RHP Bob Feller.
Both OH young guns appeared in the midsummer classic that year, with Vander Meer ending up getting the start as well as the win.

The print's dimensions are 12.5" x 14.5". It was printed on heavy-weight, photo quality paper stock shortly after the '38 All Star game at Crosley Field, and was recently discovered by a picker (think TV's American Pickers). It was part of the estate of the long time resident and former mayor of Defiance, OH. Considering it's age, it's in incredible shape. I would doubt that many of these survived the last 75 years.

Here are a few photos of the piece as well as the typed notice that originally accompanied the print.

If anyone has any more details on where these originated from, I would appreciate the help.

Nate --

That's a nice group of bats -- do they fit a theme in your collection, or did you just buy them because they're nice?

Thanks! No real theme, I just really like the bats of the 20's and 30's. The McNulty and Zinn are actually side written. You can still see the shipping label on the Zinn bat next to his name, but unfortunately, none of it can be read on either bat....

Great acquisition, Scott...

Never seen one of those, and guessing it's insanely rare. The artwork is amazing, as is the image of Feller and Vandy. It's incredible to see all of the unique and different pieces that fit within your "No Hitter" collecting theme.

Ken,

I love that bat you posted -- I know it's not like the old days when dealers insisted all those bats were gamers, but that's still a very nice one!

Thanks Peter. I used to collect pre-wwi uniforms and this type of collar is kind of tough. And the hat is even tougher.

Default Baseball Uniform

Hi Scott,
Sorry to be the bearer of bizarre and bad news. I attended the auction in person - it was actually at an auction house I've been attending auctions at very frequently over the years, and they very rarely have this kind of high quality sports stuff. I think it is also the first time they ever used live auctioneers, because they seemed very confused with the bidding process. The bad news is that I won the uniform as a live bidder at the auction. I outbid the internet bidder (which I am guessing was you), and the other bidders on the floor. The odd thing is, I had also registered on liveauctioneers too in case I couldn't get out of work on time, and when I view the auction now, they show the high bid price being $50 less than the price I paid. I am assuming this is a result of them having no previous experience with live auctioneers, and hopefully they didn't do this with other lots. Again, sorry to pass along this news.

What kind of a mess is this? How can u make this type of mistake? This is very unfair to Scott IMO. But, if u r the high bid, you are entitled to it. That auction house needs to get their act together

I know, I feel terrible making the post. Imagine my surprise when I sat down at the computer, and saw it on the October pickup thread. There were some very high value cards sold at the auction; I hope they didn't repeat the mistake. Once is bad enough though.

I placed a bid. They gave fair warning and ended it with my bid winning. They sent me an invoice later today, and I contacted a shipper - all as it should have occurred. If someone else had placed a higher bid, I would have been notified and could have bid again. I certainly would not have been sent an invoice.

I had a similar experience with Hunts recently. Their Internet Site indicated I was the high bidder, yet the lot went to a live bidder (and sold for hundreds less than my ceiling bid).

A mess indeed... Can anyone post a link to this particular auction?

These have to be fairly scarce because I've never come across one of them.
