1904 photo and matching trophy cup
3 Attachment(s)
Picture and trophy cup from the 1904 Lazarus Clippers Base Ball Club. Trophy says Ohio State Journal Trophy Champion Base Ball Club. The players' names are listed on the trophy. The picture is 19X23" as framed and the trophy is 10.5" tall. My picture quality is poor as usual.

Got this last week from a woman who contacted a local auction house to try and sell it...they referred her to me! 1953-61 Lincoln Chiefs jersey...George Noga, the manager in 1961 was the last Chief to wear the #4, this might have been his....lots of players wore #4 from 53-61, but none were big names.
|
Lincoln Chiefs jersey---- WOW very nice local piece!!!!
|
Outstanding Dan! You deserve it buddy. The perfect collection for it.
|
Beautiful and classy Jersey, Dan...
I just love those classic 1940s and '50s zip-fronts. Congrats :D |
My daughter is a dancer so I was very pleased to find this 1955 contract for The Nicholas Brothers signed by Fayard Nicholas:
http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...20contract.jpg For those who don't know them, the Nicholas Brothers were probably the greatest dancers in motion picture history. From Wikipedia: "A signature move was to leapfrog down a long, broad flight of stairs, while completing each step with a split. Its most famous performance formed the finale of the movie, Stormy Weather. Fred Astaire once told the brothers that the "Jumpin' Jive" dance number in Stormy Weather was the greatest movie musical sequence he had ever seen. ... Gregory Hines declared that if their biography were ever filmed, their dance numbers would have to be computer generated because no one now could emulate them. Ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov once called them the most amazing dancers he had ever seen in his life." http://classicmoviechat.com/wp-conte...b_calloway.jpg Also obtained this 1957 Superman fan club PC with great DC Comic advertising on the back: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...ising%20PC.jpg And this proof matchcover for 20th Century Fox, circa 1930s: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...ox%20proof.jpg |

1926-27 Sam Rice Washington Nationals Home Jersey
1 Attachment(s)
This is a rare two year style. I don't know of any other surviving uniforms of this Hall of Famer. The only other example of this style that I know of is the Walter Johnson road at Cooperstown. Have the pants that go with this as well.
I had a replica short bill made cap to display with this. The uniform is currently at the MEARS Museum, but is not yet on display. Dave Grob DaveGrob1@aol.com |

Koufax
He is one of my favorite players and opportunity came back to back.

Correct
Yes, it was his 1964 "Koufax Strikes out 15" card. It is such an iconic picture of him.
|
For as popular as he was, quality Koufax images are actually pretty tough to find. Those are both beautiful examples Bob.

Awesome Pick up Greg!

BEAUTIFUL frame job, Greg.

Great piece, Greg!

Max Carey Sliding Pads
1 Attachment(s)
Not a gamer, but still a great uniform related item in my book. What I love about these is that Carey actually applied for and received a patent for this design. Patent number awarded to Carey is 1,641,318 and dated September 6th, 1927. Plan is to display these, a copy of the patent information at the MEARS Museum. We are still working on our Pirates exhibit so it will probably not be until 2014 that we add this team.

My wife and I got back from a week long trip to the Clearwater, Fl area and took a side trip to purchase a pretty large collection of bats, gloves, uniforms and photos. Spent our 25th anniversary day doing it. 95% of the bats are 1940's and earlier. Mike

1915 World Series Scorebook with the "Babe"
3 Attachment(s)
Just added this guy to my scorebook collection. It contains all of the 1915 World Series games between the Red Sox and Phillies. Most importantly it has 20 year old Babe Ruth's first World Series appearance. The Red Sox were pretty loaded that year, winning the World Series 4 games to 1, so Ruth only had one appearance in the Series - batting as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning of game one in the Sox only loss. The Phillies won this game 3-1 with Grover Cleveland Alexander out dueling Ernie Shore.
This scorebook was likely either kept by a Philadelphia reporter or a team official. In addition to the scorekeeping, there are notes regarding the attendance as well as the gate receipts. It also has several of the Phillies pre-season games from Florida prior to the 1917 season. Rob M. Attachment 116732 Attachment 116734 Attachment 116733 |
I have been looking for one of these for a while. I see them up on ebay about 1 per year, but always seem to either forget or just miss out pulling the trigger.

FINEST Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Photo out there!
2 Attachment(s)
I was lucky enough to pick up this photo recently. IMO, one of the FINEST Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig photos in existence! It is an 8x10 large, Original Silver-Gelatin photo and offers absolutely stunning clarity taken just prior to the 1927 World Series. It has been used multiple times over the decades passed and is really cool to see that it was used in 1961 to publicize when Roger Maris broke Ruth's homerun record! It has some paper loss around the edges but the central image of Ruth & Gehrig is pristine still has its original caption attached to the reverse!

Perhaps one of the more under-rated players in terms of memorabilia appeal, Rogers Hornsby, but the guys numbers are sickening. .358 lifetime BA over a 23 year career. During his age 28 season in 1924 he hit .424!!! with 25 home runs, and then followed it up the following year stumbling to a .403 BA with 39 HRs and 143 RBI. What kind a contract would those numbers bring these days?
A little more than the $90 dollars a month he made with this Texas team. This nearly 9 x 7 original photo dates to 1914 or 1915 just prior to joining the St Louis Cardinals, here on the Denison Railroaders. I'd like to get a look at the back of the photo but its affixed to a vintage cardboard backing. |
That is a great photo Paul! Hornsby been would've been making close to what Cano currently wants, that's for sure...
|
Thanks Bryan
And those who know me, know I love the chase as much as the catch.....this photo didn't even mention Rogers Hornsby in the title on Ebay, listed as:
"Rare Antique Dennison Railroaders Infield Baseball Photograph" Paid a mere $100 bucks (even used a $10 off ebay coupon to bring it under $100) for what could possibly be Rogers Hornsby earliest piece of memorabilia. Been searching past auctions of Legendary, Hunts etc. can't find anything of his from 1915 or earlier prior to joining the Cardinals late in 1915. |

Yes Mike, that could be one of the biggest and best hauls we've ever had here on a pickup thread!

Great pick-up on the Denison photo, Paul. It would make a great companion piece to my team RPPC.

I recently picked up this 1939 vintage Johnny Vander Meer Black's Annual.
These have to be fairly scarce because I've never come across one of them. |
2 Attachment(s)
Just picked this up. It's from a photo album that contained a team photo that had been cut to make a photo collage. I believe this is the 1934 Cleveland Red Sox of the Negro National League.

As an avid Red Sox collector, I find this to be an awesome item. Most likely it was someone that worked for the Phillies. Where did you find it? John |

Hey John, I picked it up from another collector who previously had it for a decade or two. Rob M. |

I don't remember the rules about this sort of thing showing an auction before it is over but this is a nice looking item

The general rule is to post your thoughts after the auction has ended. Outing auctions via the Internet is considered by most to be a no-no.

Potential buyers, who have already seen the auction, hate it. Potential buyers, who would have missed the auction, love it. Sellers love it. |

Jim, you're limited to a single hotdog at the National next year. :) Brock, I agree. I feel like I've seen plain silver balls like that, that could be antique silver plated and engraved. And that box strikes me as odd. I wish I had bought that lemonpeel silver presentation ball on ebay last year with the Minnesota Indian motif. Really upset I didn't buy that and have been on the lookout for 19th century silver presentation balls since. But this one I'm not going for. If anyone has such pieces, please reach out via PM. |
