The cutter can cut a curve by accident.
The curved caption is because the plates were laid out with transfers. If the transfer gets creased or torn during that then the part being put down will be flawed. It's the same sort of thing as the other caption varieties. Steve B |

I'm not at home at the moment... But if you look at most of the Mathewson pitching cards, both white and dark caps, you will see the caption curve...
