Why the Curve?
1 Attachment(s)
So, I have been thinking about this for a long time now!
Actually, the entire time I owned this particle card(Sold it because I couldn't eat the card & I Really Hope that the New Owner doesn't mind me using the Scan ;-) & now I'm finally asking the Question... So, "Why is there a Curve in the printing process?" I realize that it probably can only be explained by one of you fine Deadball Card Freaks(& I mean this with my utmost admiration)... oR just the most reasonable of answers by one of you gentlemen who have studied the T206 printing process with a Grand Passion. curves are impossible
the industrial trimmer is 100% straight...

The card is not trimmed. The top angle cut AND the fact that the name is at the top, not the bottom of the card indicate that more than just a little askew at the printing shop on that particular day. As diagonal cuts and such are normally caused by dull blades which tend to pull the sheet crooked rather than cut clean, along with the fact that the sheet was not properly aligned for cutting would suggest to me that this particular sheet was also "caught in a bind" somehow during the exact time the printing of the name took place and moved just ever so slightly and caused this curved look. One would think that there would be some smearing of the ink but perhaps not. OR something could have been underneath the sheet and caused the abnormal print. At any rate it appears 100% legit, another print freak to add to the list.

The cutter can cut a curve by accident.
The curved caption is because the plates were laid out with transfers. If the transfer gets creased or torn during that then the part being put down will be flawed. It's the same sort of thing as the other caption varieties. Steve B |
I'm not at home at the moment... But if you look at most of the Mathewson pitching cards, both white and dark caps, you will see the caption curve...
I'll post some scans when I get a chance... Be well Brian |
