The card sure looks to me like it has come in contact w/ something greasy OR has been subject to some kind of a "cleaning" agent. I don't think the scan settings have anything to do w/ the way it looks.

....normally you can barely make out the ''BVG'' logo on a Beckett BVG slab...in order to make it so visible there may have been a lot of trial and error scan attempts.....just a thought....

I do know that at the 2000 National in Anaheim a collector submitted a high-end 1952 Topps Mantle to PSA for on-site grade and they rejected it for "Evidence of Trimming". The same collector then submitted it to Beckett on-site and it graded BVG 7 or 8? Now I'm not even sure which grade since it was so long ago. Whether this is the same Mantle I have no idea.

Relative to the color of the label, the borders really do look off colored.

The Mantle looks like it has a very slight diamond cut making the bottom look trimmed. Hard to tell from the scan though. The border color is a little weird.

On line scan looks "cleaner" now than how I remember it from my first look.

....In 2000 Beckett was encapsulating all sportscards , regardless of era , using four subgrade categories listed on the reverse and there was a large artsy logo of a big ''B'' on the front....''BVG'' was first used several years later than 2000 and they still retained the sub-grade system for several more years.....this Goodwin '52 Mantle is a fairly recent submission.
.....and wow what a memory you have !
