Here is one of my favorite pieces-a 1950's Jackie Robinson wallet.

Love Ben's picture from Game 1 of the 1955 World Series...but I agree with Yogi...Jackie was out.

In every picture and every film clip I've ever seen, he sure looked out, and Yogi is more than positive he was out. Last year, Bob Costas did a show with a bunch of umpires and they showed a couple of clips from angles I had never seen before, and I'll be darned if he didn't look safe. Either way, it's part of Baseball and World Series lore and makes for a fun debate.

Also, one of the funniest stories about that steal came from Yogi himself. Phil Rizzuto used to get on him about how Phil had the best angle from SS and that Jackie was safe, which used to piss off Yogi. It wasn't till years later that Yogi saw a box score and realized that Rizzuto was out of the game at that point and Coleman was playing SS. I bet Rizzuto is looking down and still laughing about that one.

In the book Opening Day
Pictures show him as out as far as the tag goes But the author pointed out Berra was in the batters box a clear violation making him safe First I ever read about that aspect but that is not what the ump ruled on Last edited by rcp1936; 04-19-2013 at 04:37 PM. |
