With 42 coming out lets see your Jackie and integration related item

6 Attachment(s)
With 42 set to come out next week I want to show a couple of items related to Jackie and baseball integration. I would love to what other members have along these lines. These may not be the most valuable item for a monetary sense, I would argue that they may be some of the most important baseball artifacts from a historical stand point

1. Cover of the first issue of Our Sports magazine. This was a short lived (5 issue) publication put out by Jackie while he was still an active player. Can you imagine a player today publishing such a controversial mag during his career

2. Interior editors comment from 1 above

3. 1903 Scorecard Harvard v Brown. Notable because with fairly little fanfare Harvard fielded a black short stop (William Matthews) who not only stared on the diamond but also became one of the first black attorneys general

4. 1907 Postcard from an integrated Wisconsin semi-pro team featuring George Wilson who had stared with the Page Fence Giants in the 1890's and played on a team with Honus Wagner as the color line was finally barring blacks from the minors in the 1890's

5. Photo of Larry Doby (who I would ague went through just as much as Jackie but gets little of the recognition-- few remember that he came up just a couple of months after Jackie and he did it with no minor league time

6. Petition to have blacks admitted to the majors. I would guess that few of the people who signed this knew that the organization had ties to the Communist party

The blog after my next one will feature the Robinson pins. I have acquired a few since I did the book.

Red Sox pitcher William "Otey" Clark pitched to Jackie during his Red Sox tryout in 1945. Otey's only year with the Red Sox was 1945. Here is Otey's hat. Purchased from Otey.

I'm excited to see the movie. I have signed rookie cards of every HOFer who debuted after 1933, but this one is one of my favorites.

Some incredible items in this thread! I don't have much on the memorabilia side, but I never miss a chance to show off these:

Had my son-in-law, who does custom framing, frame this for me so it could be removed whenever I want to look at it's contents. One of my favorite pieces.

Just some trivia - Hank Thompson was the first black batter to face a black pitcher Don Newcombe.

This has a light poor contrast signature on it:

Here is a framed copy of the 1947 Time Magazine with Jackie Robinson gracing the cover (wish I had a better image)...it was presented to my father by his colleagues upon his retirement in 2004. Cool note...Dad's retirement was on July 1st 2004 and that night I took him to the NYY game...happened to be the epic affair vs. the Red Sox in which Jeter dove into the crowd chasing down a foul ball. Not a bad day for the Old Man!

In every picture and every film clip I've ever seen, he sure looked out, and Yogi is more than positive he was out. Last year, Bob Costas did a show with a bunch of umpires and they showed a couple of clips from angles I had never seen before, and I'll be darned if he didn't look safe. Either way, it's part of Baseball and World Series lore and makes for a fun debate.

mr2686 04-16-2013 03:55 PM

Also, one of the funniest stories about that steal came from Yogi himself. Phil Rizzuto used to get on him about how Phil had the best angle from SS and that Jackie was safe, which used to piss off Yogi. It wasn't till years later that Yogi saw a box score and realized that Rizzuto was out of the game at that point and Coleman was playing SS. I bet Rizzuto is looking down and still laughing about that one.

In the book Opening Day
Pictures show him as out as far as the tag goes But the author pointed out Berra was in the batters box a clear violation making him safe
First I ever read about that aspect but that is not what the ump ruled on

I think Yogi set up for the tag on top of the plate, and let Jackie get his toe to the plate before the tag - but it always seemed to me like that was a classic "ball beat him to the base so he's out" kind of situation. Very tough call. Never really thought about it, but if Kellert had swung, Jackie would have scored and Kellert gotten first on CI (and Yogi probably would have been concussed!)

But back to the Jackie items - I have (and really like) the tin litho bank in this ad, and have seen the bust bank (along with so many repros I would never feel comfortable buying one), but has anyone ever seen the statue or the rabbit's foot that is advertised here?

Hankphenom 04-22-2013 09:41 AM

Great ad, what comic is that from? And I've never seen the statuette or the rabbit's foot, doubt if they were ever made. But they've got people sending money in for them, so what happened?

laughlinfan 04-22-2013 11:45 AM

Jackie ad

A friend actually sent me the picture a whle ago, since it showed how the dime bank was distributed - not sure where it is from, but from the picture it certainly looks like the back page of a comic or magazine. Maybe someone else here might know...

Since the dime bank and the bust bank are out there, I would guess that the other two would have been available. I can see that a rabbit's foot (real or fake!) might not hold up over the years (and probably weren't as popular as some of the others to begin with). But that full figure statue is really cool!

I actually tried out my dime bank (it can't be!) about thrirty five years ago, and it counted the dimes and wouldn't let me open it until I got to $5.00, as I recall. Then again, it's been a few years! :)
