I never realized that the image on this card, which is the same one used on the 1954 Dan-Dee, was from a photo taken from his rookie season in 1951 by Bob Olen, the Yankees photographer.
The black and white photos then were hand colored to create the cards. So you might say it's his first true rookie photo on a baseball card. (Info above from Rich Mueller, SCD 7/14/24.)
