I don't know who the seller is. He is probably a great guy. I am just curious how many on this board would buy this at any price? So, what price would you pay for it?

Highland mint made plaques or something with little wood slices, and some coin type things. When they started offering the sawdust I thought it was silly, but also a creative way of squeezing every last bit of use out of whatever they were cutting up.
And I hate that they cut that stuff up -Assuming any of it was real. I have a nice piece of ash out in the wodshop, when I make something out of it I'd be happy to send along some sawdust or half inch squares thin enough to put on a card........ I did use wood from the first christmas tree my wfe and I had to make ornaments for family, and they were quite popular. Steve B |

At some point, things stop being memorabilia, or collectibles, and start manipulating the eccentricities of collectors. And boy are there some eccentricities among us!

There was a time when I would have spent $1 on it. Not anymore. It's not worth remembering that I have it somewhere in my collection. Worthless in my opinion.

I would have paid him $100 to not cut the bat up. Is there any other hobby that destroys its goods like this? Doesn't make any sense at all.

$1, but I would pay $2 if it didn't say between 1916-21.
By 1921 it's just as likely he was playing stickball or something else out in the street. or maybe the 21 doesn't refer to a date... so $2 then Last edited by alanu; 12-13-2011 at 10:09 AM. Reason: added last comment |

You have to be real careful when buying dust off the street in little pouches.....You never know if it's the real stuff. Even if it is it could be cut with some fake filler and you might not be getting the 100% real deal. There could be some new Louisville Slugger Dust in that stuff too. You gotta be careful, Stay clean...

I foresee a thread in about 6 months discussing whether a game-used Jackson bat was "doctored" or created from the little bags of game-used sawdust...

Not worth a dime to me. At one time (assuming it is legit) it was an incredible piece of baseball history. It's now worthless to me.
Of course I could buy it, split it into two bags of sawdust and double my money... |

ChiSoxFan - it's amazing how much time that guy spent in his description making sure everyone looking at the listing knows just who Joe Jackson is.
PS I'm a Sox fan too & a bit nervous about KW rebuilding this team. |

Fake pieces of cloth on cards, autographs cut up to post on cards resulting in missing letters, bats cut up to put on cards. This hobby is so self destructive and only for one reason, the extraordinary measures that companies will take in pursuit of the $$$$. The business of America is business, I totally understand that. But lets temper that statement with a modicum of sense and not an utter lack of class and a total lack of the sense of the history of what they are destroying.

Ditto. I find your last sentance interesting though. If there were a buyer for this dust how much do they require? Is 1 oz worht $100 and therefore 1/2 oz is only worth $50. Where is the supply/dmd inflection point. Can I sell 1/10th of an oz for $100 as easily as 1 oz?

Wouldn't buy it for any price. By paying anything for this type of stuff only encourages more destruction of these allegedly historical relics.

IF somebody can PROVE to me that this is actually sawdust from Joe Jackson bat, I still would have no interest, only sadness that a Joe Jackson bat has been destroyed.
But, since I doubt that it ever was a Joe Jackson bat, I feel only sadness at what our "hobby" has become. Is this stuff graded authentic, or did it get a number? The picture is too smalll to tell. Doug |

Not graded, just put in a capsule by Highland mint.
They currently make stuff like this http://www.highlandmint.com/2005worl...photomint.aspx Or more commonly medal type items with dirt inside. http://www.highlandmint.com/national...tkeychain.aspx The Game used bat ones looked like this http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedi...used-119003378 And the sawdust was the leftovers from making the little slices of bat to frame with the photo. They had a COA with pictures on the back showing what they'd cut up. These predate the "game used" cards, and probably inspired them. And yeah, I think they should be beaten for cutting up that stuff. Steve B |

One dealer at the 2008 All-Star Fanfest in New York had a ton of 'em...
![]() (Photo taken July 14, 2008. © Gary Dunaier. Link to upload on Flickr.com: here.) The dealer who was selling these said they came out "a few years ago," and that he hadn't seen them around for sale that much and he was pretty much the only guy who was selling them. They may very well be fakes, but I bought a couple of Ty Cobbs ($15 apiece) because these were produced by the Highland Mint, and I trust them when it comes to authenticity.

........seller changed from BIN to Auction
currently at 10 bucks http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shoeless-Joe...item4ab21f8d48 (My personal vote was for $10 bucks - but I guess this will end at about 20-25) |

I wonder if someone directed the seller to this site? My $5 option stands but I probably wouldn't even buy one for that much. As I said it would only be to sell it for a profit and the $5-$10 profit vs time spent can be better spent. (opportunity cost of time) To each their own though and if someone wants to collect these little bags of dust more power to them. It doesn't harm me so I don't care...LL

Sorry, I wanna change my vote...I put $5, which I think if given the opportunity to buy it for that, I'd seriously consider it. However, after giving it some thought, I'd never touch this, because the acceptance of such garbage only further advocates the destruction of such historical items..

The auction ends at 19:47:57 PST tonight (that's 7.47pm PST, or 10.47pm here in the East)... be interesting to see what it goes for. And no, I don't plan to bid. The two Cobbs I have are enough. Closest I'll ever have to an actual Cobb bat.
