Default E91 American Caramel

Haven't seen a lot of talk about these lately. They are a fairly inexpensive (*relatively speaking) way to collect. This was $106 after tax and shipping from a recent Brockelman auction. I kind of like the staining on back.

Copied from the Oldcardboard site-

Set Summary
Produced by the American Caramel Company of Philadelphia

The E91 set is unnumbered and contains a total of 99 cards

It is divided into three subsets (E91-A; E91-B and E91-C)

Card fronts use generic color artwork with white borders

Backs contain a complete checklist for each subset

When it comes to threads concerning E91 cards, I believe I am required by Net54 bylaws to post the following link:

https://net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=243920

Old Cardboard still clings, like many in the hobby, to the sweeping 'Generic' label for these cards that has been attached to E91 since the dawn of the ACC...it's an uphill battle to shake brains into focus.

Here is a group shot of the 11 Athletics cards in the E91A set.

I have a fondness for this one:

Default Washington gets slighted by American Caramel

With a focus on Washington, I am a victim of Brian's exhaustive and convincing demonstration that the images are rooted in images/renderings reflective of the actual E91-A/B players. Since the same images are used for the Washington players "featured" in E91-C, it means that the Washington images are not "generic", which would be bad enough, but instead reflect opposing team players, dressed up in Washington uniforms, which seems far worse.

Funny, I never thought that the 33 players in the E91A set were capable of pulling off such a devious stunt (E91B being the test run, and full participation for E91C), as is seen with Harry Davis pranking us all with his best John Donahue impersonation on your E91C card. They should have , however, employed masks/makeup to make things more convincing.

I like these but here is an example of why some people don't. My McGraw card is essentially the same as Leon's Hooper card.

Thank you Leon for bringing up E91;
one of the most underappreciated sets of the era.
Of the many fun finds in it are:
1. Bresnahan's E91A "True" RC; excludes supplements, post cards, game cards; actually inserted in product 1908.
2. Rube Marquard's E91B RC; cool thing here is, after Mcginnity (HOF) left they gave his image to another to-be HOFer.
3. Home Run Baker's E91B RC; is actually the image of departed Jimmy Collins (HOF); once again, assigned to another to-be HOFer.

There are many little side tracks to this set and am so grateful to Brian for his work. Love this set.

Not many other pre-WW1 sets can offer you the chance to find uncut strips of cards - I appreciate the E91s for that!

I would love to have been a fly on the wall as they decided to make Topsy Hartzel, the extra one in the row. I find fascinating the logic in the print setup. This is such a cool piece.

I enjoy this set also Leon. Had lots of my 1909 Pirates in there. Here’s some of mine. The ghost image is interesting I think.
