Chris Sewell posted an interesting video yesterday about The 10 Biggest Sportscard Value Drops Since Prices Peaked 2 Years Ago. The video (12 minutes long) is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbZZJK351to Some observations from the video: 1. I knew modern dropped in the last two years, but I was shocked at these numbers. 90 percent loss on cards over 50k? Wow. 2. Glad to see that vintage cards didn’t make the list ![]() 3. Interesting to see what happens to these cards in the next 2 years. Gain some value back, flatline, or lose more. |

Well when some cards of a basketball player almost no one on this website ever heard of are trading for more than the value of 99.9% of Vintage cards, probably was a little unsustainable!

Even the current prices on those cards seem high to me considering none of them are rare, but I'm not a modern guy so maybe I'm missing something.

Very interesting and not surprising about Modern cards
Would love to see if someone did something like that for the top Vintage Baseball Cards to see what or how things are trending

Fuuny you should say that, I was in a bar Saturday night full of young people and you would have been shocked how much Magee-spelled-wrong chatter there was. A few of the youngsters wouldn't shut up about it.

Seriously, someone spent $660,000 for a Magee error card at Heritage in September 2018.
Anyone wants to argue that's a smart use of a large amount of money, have at it. |

If 10 guys want a Magee and there's 3 available or, If 3000 guys want a Luka and there's 900 available. Obviously, the demand for Basketball has fallen off while pre-war has increased imo but maybe there is an underlying base of fans willing to pay for that Luka. I think at some point there may be more Luka cards than buyers at which point they would really fall off a cliff. Meanwhile, those basketball prices sure make the current T206 Plank for sale look cheap. |

My only regret is I was not the seller on any of those cards when they went for the crazy-nutso hammer prices. That is simply scary.......

I'm glad I can once again go to Target for cat litter and dish soap without 2 dozen grown men trying to kill each other over a restock of retail ball cards to flip on Ebay for $10 profit.

As fun as it is to beat up on basketball I still don't think you'll hurt yourself investing in LeBron. Definitely not to the extent those phony sales went to, but sooner or later he'll have his own Last Dance documentary released about him and his Topps and Topps Chrome rookies will shoot right back up.

There is a much different audience for basketball today than there was when Bill Russell or Michael Jordan were playing basketball. I would say this generation of fans are definitely not against LeBron or his opinions.
By the way, who is the most iconic active American athlete in the world today? In my opinion it is LeBron James. I don't even know who I'd consider second. The entire world knows his name and basketball is now a worldwide sport in ways it never was before. Last edited by packs; 02-23-2023 at 02:32 PM. |

IMO there's an argument to made for that but the worldwide popularity of basketball puts LeBron over the top.

I see $100K+ being spent on some of that stuff and laugh. Holy cow, look at how much nice vintage you could get for $100K.
Oldest card was an '86 and several cards in the video were in the last 10 years. I suppose it's all relative. If people have the money to piss away, then great, I hope they keep that money on the new and shiny and away from the vintage market.

Most of us are 'normal' collectors buying 'normal' vintage cards that can be expensive, but not King Midas worthy. How about an assessment of the values of middle ground Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Mantle, HOF rookies, etc., cards from the 50's through the 70's? That would speak to a lot more people than all of this weird, top-shelf, modern

True, but even with all the detractors he is probably still the most iconic figure today. Woods seems a bit past the peak of his iconic status. Messi?
