I think the modern market is much bigger. Many more people are interested in a Luka rookie than a Magee-spelled-wrong.

Fuuny you should say that, I was in a bar Saturday night full of young people and you would have been shocked how much Magee-spelled-wrong chatter there was. A few of the youngsters wouldn't shut up about it.

Seriously, someone spent $660,000 for a Magee error card at Heritage in September 2018.

Anyone wants to argue that's a smart use of a large amount of money, have at it.

I suppose the law of supply and demand kicks in at some point.

If 10 guys want a Magee and there's 3 available or,

If 3000 guys want a Luka and there's 900 available.

Obviously, the demand for Basketball has fallen off while pre-war has increased imo but maybe there is an underlying base of fans willing to pay for that Luka. I think at some point there may be more Luka cards than buyers at which point they would really fall off a cliff.

Meanwhile, those basketball prices sure make the current T206 Plank for sale look cheap.

My only regret is I was not the seller on any of those cards when they went for the crazy-nutso hammer prices. That is simply scary.......

Laws of supply and demand ALWAYS take hold eventually.......problem is more about timing due to the gross inefficiency of the marketplace and to some degree the lack of consistency of the grading companies.

Cards for sale: https://www.flickr.com/photos/185900663@N07/albums

I am actively buying and selling vintage sports cards graded and raw. Feedback as a buyer: https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=297262

I am accepting select private consignments of quality vintage cards (raw or graded) and collecting "want" lists for higher end ($1K+) vintage cards.

My totally unsubstantiated take on the basketball card frenzy, completely without evidence, is that some of the NBA players, while quarantined with nothing to do, decided to see who could make the best card collection. They were used to throwing around tens of thousands of dollars at a time, so the prices didn't mean much to them. Once their season was over and they got out of the bubble, they put all their cards in a shoe box and forgot about them.
