Lou Gertenrich, Pittsburgh Pirates right fielder for one day in 1903 and the man who put out a baseball set in 1922, would have turned 139 today if modern science hadn't failed us for so long. I've included a mini bio in the link below. Show your Gertenrich cards if you got 'em

Happened upon this page from a book or something a few years back and it confirmed what I had long suspected... Gertenrich had used a picture of himself for the backs of his cards. Thus, even though Gertenrich never had a card made during his career any of the cards from his Candy Company could be viewed as a card of Lou himself if viewed from the back!

That is cool Rhett. I had heard that he incorporated himself into the cards but had never seen confirmation of it. Todd that is a beautiful example, I don't believe I've ever seen a Gertenrich without paper loss on the back.

![]() Here are my examples (all but one with the typical spot of loss on back)...

I have Elmer Miller and my back has the same exact area of paper loss. Makes me wonder if all of these cards came from the same scrap book

Beautiful cards everyone! Don't know how I missed this thread. Sorry to raise it back from the dead but I love these backs! I have a few, but it looks like Rhett has me beat. All but one of mine have paper loss on the back as well. Always looking to add to my collection if anyone has any available ... can anyone help me get a 9th for a full page!?

I have to work on better scans of these. Walker is on the front of the Gertenrich and it is in an SGC 40 holder. BTW, neat find Rhett. Thanks for sharing.

Leon,
You probably shouldn't have written your initials on the back of that vertical Witmor. It's going to cost you some money when you go to sell it.

I got it from Lew Lipset, it is pictured on page 38 of his Encyclopedia (the 3 versions edition), but have never asked him about it. I always thought it kind of funny. I have no idea if he put the letters there or not.

Ken--I believe the vast majority of the Lou Gertenrich cards that have surfaced came from one seller on ebay about a dozen years ago that had dozens of them individually listed. Each card had paper loss on the back as has been seen in this thread, which makes one think they all came from a scrapbook. I ended up winning one for my collection...Hank Gowdy. Brian |

I thought that looked familiar. I doubt Lew wrote on it though.

Does anybody here know who owns the Whitey Glazner (SGC 10) Gertenrich? I didn't know it existed until today, but I'm collecting Glazner now, so I'd like to see this card if one of you has it. Thanks.
