A few months ago, I posted about 4 1909 Colgan’s Chips square proof cards that I came across in a personal collection of someone not connected to the hobby.
These cards are fairly rare I feel as the major grading companies have all graded so few of these. I finally sent them off to SGC (along with an 1896 Spalding H-818) and they just came back today. All in all, I’m happy with the grades. SGC said the Wagner showed evidence of trimming. It is slightly off center, but since no one really knows anything about them with any certainty, I’m not so sure that I agree with their conclusion. Anyway, presented here for your enjoyment… |

I am a total newbie to the Colgan Chip cards (and tins). I think are so cool and unique
And these proofs? Amazing! Congrats - really beautiful. Enjoy! |

Thank you. They call them proofs, but no one really knows much of anything about them. My theory is that they were some type of retailer premium, maybe to put on a poster or something in the store to sell the chips. Others have different opinions.

They look great w/ tough grades
I've had a few over the years & they would have graded higher back in the day. Here's a beat-up 1.5 that I had ![]() |

Nice one! Haven't seen that one before. I've been looking at various graded examples across all of the TPG's. I don't see an actual checklist for these, but it could be fun to compile the "set".

I agree, but that's what everyone seems to call them.

Everyone is wrong LOL....and that is rarely the case, actually.
They just don't have many characteristics of proofs. Sort of reminds me of the red and gold derby cigar cards that aren't. .

I believe they're clearly related to Colgan's, but I feel they were probably meant to go in a book, on a poster, etc. Perhaps something just for the retailer since there's nothing written on the back.

It appears if grading company doesn't know much about certain cards and submitter keeps on pushing, then they would just grade them as "proof"?

I disagree, as well. SGC says a lot of cards are 'trimmed' these days, including in my experience lately. I've resubmitted to PSA for number grades with success.

There is a definite off-center issue, as well as a noticeable nick on the side. I guess my concern with this one is more along the lines of, since no one has any solid info on them, do we know if they were hand-cut...or even how they were cut at all? If something was cut oddly by the manufacturer, isn't that different than "trimmed" by a recipient? |

Apparently, there are now "3" total across PSA & SGC. I can see another Fake Swamp find in the very near future uncovering 1000's of these things. ![]() ![]() It's out "From the Dan Gantt collection" and "Into the FuddJcal collection" now at record prices like most crap I buy. ![]() ![]() |

I agree, definitely looks hand cut. My personal feeling on these is that they came in some format that allowed a retailer to affix them to some kind of poster or promotional sign in their stores in order to promote the chips by showing what players will be available in the tins. I think that’s why there’s no advertising on the back and some have been found with glue residue of some type on them. I also think these are fairly rare as evidenced by the various pop reports.
