1909 Colgan’s Proofs back from SGC

A few months ago, I posted about 4 1909 Colgan’s Chips square proof cards that I came across in a personal collection of someone not connected to the hobby.

These cards are fairly rare I feel as the major grading companies have all graded so few of these. I finally sent them off to SGC (along with an 1896 Spalding H-818) and they just came back today.

All in all, I’m happy with the grades. SGC said the Wagner showed evidence of trimming. It is slightly off center, but since no one really knows anything about them with any certainty, I’m not so sure that I agree with their conclusion.

Those are great looking cards. They aren't proofs though.

I agree, but that's what everyone seems to call them.

Everyone is wrong LOL....and that is rarely the case, actually.
They just don't have many characteristics of proofs. Sort of reminds me of the red and gold derby cigar cards that aren't.

I believe they're clearly related to Colgan's, but I feel they were probably meant to go in a book, on a poster, etc. Perhaps something just for the retailer since there's nothing written on the back.

It appears if grading company doesn't know much about certain cards and submitter keeps on pushing, then they would just grade them as "proof"?
