I have been looking at Ted Williams baseball cards a lot lately and looking to purchase one soon. The 1939 rookie is a little out of price range unfortunately, I believe the next two cards in which I am particularly interested in is the 1941 play ball vs the 1954 bowman. This has been a hard decision for me just looking for some advice. Also, all other opinions are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Aesthetically speaking I prefer the 1955 and 1956 Tops versions.

Also my choice as Ted`s best looking card. With the right condition the "48" image just pops out at you. Take your time , you should have a decent supply to make a purchase from.

Another good option is to look for photos. Here's my 1939 Rc era photo of a young Ted.

Agree with those cards already mentioned as the outstanding candidates.
As iconic as the '54B is, Ted looks a bit 'frumpy' to me in that card for some reason. If you can find any of these three with good eye appeal, go for it! 41003.jpg 48003.jpg 51003.jpg And despite the lack of color, a nice example of the '40 PB can be surprisingly satisfying as well. Picked up a PSA 6 at the National this past year that just spoke to me. You can't go wrong -- it's Teddy fricking Ballgame! ![]()

A "The Great American Bubble Card Flipping, Trading and Bubble Gum Book" reference, nice. I like the 56 Topps design and it is affordable to most who can't spend the bigger bucks for a more key card.

I like the '57 shot...follow thru swing at Yankee stadium. Plus...the first year that Topps listed a player's stats year by year. '54 card #1 is a close 2nd...

Of the two OP mentioned, I'd go with the 1941 Play Ball. The year of .406, and his first full color card, you can't go wrong. Otherwise, I like the 1954-56 Topps, and the 1949 Leaf.

I think the '41 Playball, being his .406 year, and the '49 Leaf, with such a stern look. It basically screams the "young idealist" then "grizzled war vet" dichotomy.

So happy to have this one as part of my collection... A very under rated rookie card in my opinion...
