What is your favorite Ted Williams card?
I have been looking at Ted Williams baseball cards a lot lately and looking to purchase one soon. The 1939 rookie is a little out of price range unfortunately, I believe the next two cards in which I am particularly interested in is the 1941 play ball vs the 1954 bowman. This has been a hard decision for me just looking for some advice. Also, all other opinions are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I settled for a very slightly trimmed rookie.:) I have been debating putting the border back on the card. I have a donor card but just have not been able to destroy the donor card to fix the Ted yet.

Aesthetically speaking I prefer the 1955 and 1956 Tops versions.

Another good option is to look for photos. Here's my 1939 Rc era photo of a young Ted.

I love the 51 Bowman, personally.

I love the image on the 54 Wilson's Franks

"In 1955, there were 77,263,127 male American human beings. And every one of them in his heart of hearts would have given two arms, a leg and his collection of Davy Crockett iron-ons to be Teddy Ballgame." |

Agree with those cards already mentioned as the outstanding candidates.
As iconic as the '54B is, Ted looks a bit 'frumpy' to me in that card for some reason. If you can find any of these three with good eye appeal, go for it! Attachment 258671 Attachment 258672 Attachment 258673 And despite the lack of color, a nice example of the '40 PB can be surprisingly satisfying as well. Picked up a PSA 6 at the National this past year that just spoke to me. You can't go wrong -- it's Teddy fricking Ballgame! :D |
A "The Great American Bubble Card Flipping, Trading and Bubble Gum Book" reference, nice. I like the 56 Topps design and it is affordable to most who can't spend the bigger bucks for a more key card.

I like the '57 shot...follow thru swing at Yankee stadium. Plus...the first year that Topps listed a player's stats year by year. '54 card #1 is a close 2nd...

Of the two OP mentioned, I'd go with the 1941 Play Ball. The year of .406, and his first full color card, you can't go wrong. Otherwise, I like the 1954-56 Topps, and the 1949 Leaf.

I love the 51 bowman, 54 Wilson franks, 56 topps. But my favorite is this one:

1941 Play Ball for me. 1955 Topps would be my second choice.

Another vote for 54 Wilson Franks...

55 Topps hands down.

I think the '41 Playball, being his .406 year, and the '49 Leaf, with such a stern look. It basically screams the "young idealist" then "grizzled war vet" dichotomy.

So happy to have this one as part of my collection... A very under rated rookie card in my opinion...
