The lack of an extended bidding clock at SCP is frustrating. Part of the fun for me is watching the clock get low and I'm high bidder and I'm about to win...... .and then it resets again. Wife thinks its crazy but once I see it get below a minute I get an adrenaline kick, nervous sweaty palms...this is a big part of the hobby I enjoy.
Watching a max bid get chipped away at isn't enjoyable and holding off blindly to see what goes down in the late hours is risky. This isn't fun.

I can not comprehend the prices hit on several of the Red Hindus. I feel awful for those friends who had to watch the cards they thought they had a chance go for upwards and beyond 10 times what they should have.
Sorry guys. Consigner & house did very well.

I can't believe the yankee stadium seat sold for $2,700 and it was in horrible shape. Should have bought it when it sold at a local auction for only $600, lol

I did not bid in this one, but I looked thru all the Angelo Dundee stuff. Very Cool. The t210-8 lot winner got a really good deal at $80 per card. Lot 258 Murphy for $31,000 is just silly. No baseball card is worth $31,000 to me. You can buy a nice used Ferrari with that. Cheers.

I think the T210 Jackson card went kind of low - $96K??
I was thinking more along the lines of $120-130K. Just my opinion. Tony |

The beauty of an auction...if you have the money its yours...if you don't have the money then its a rough thing to watch. I set my sights on a few I like and then watch the bidding...if i'm not a player this time then maybe next time. I appreciate the guys who pay the big bucks as much as the guys who buy the bargains...What a hobby !!

To paraphrase the great collector Lionel Carter (RIP) " There was a young kid that came to the auction. We couldn't win anything. He bought it all." He was speaking of Bill Mastro. That was many years ago. My, how times change.

well I had to let the Seymour throwing go.. I just couldn't justify wasting over $10K on a card.. I guess my Seymour back run will have to wait for another to show up...
upsetting that someone out there decided to spend over $10K from what the cards worth.. if that card ever gest resold it will go for $2K... and I cant even think about the murphy... I hope it ended up with the right guy...

Thanks Al... the only thing I can think of is some guy with serious cash was looking to complete a redhindu subset... and didn't care about literally pissing away $40K between the 2 cards.. the bidder logged in again at 3am and started again bidding on the Seymour and the murphy....
if both of those cards sold together they would go for around $3K.. they just sold for a combined $43K!.. wish I didn't care about losing $40,000 on a purchase... maybe it was the new powerball $500million winner out of long Island NY. ![]()

Chris,
I haven't gotten a invoice yet but in my account summary for SCP it shows my winnings. As far as the dollars go, if the winners are collectors I'm sure their motivation is that, collecting. If they spend 2K or 20K its there money and they don't think there wasting money...there buying what they want for there collection...i'd be doing it too if I had the money. The fact is for me, I don't. I held firm on my limits and moved around the auction to see what I could afford. I hate walking away from a back run card I need but there is always more cardboard out there. Whether it shows up in my lifetime and when I have the cash is the question. |

I hear you Adam, as soon as I saw the SCP pic for the auction when they were raw and then the board figured out the confirmed list I knew I had to go for this card. It's been on my list since I first started collecting, it went one bid under my max and looks like I did get it

Guys--I don't want to hijack this conversation, but I'd be interested in some of the T209-II that were won last evening (Lot #293), if the winner is open to selling/trading any.
Thanks, Mike

Collectors with the resources going for cards they needed, not the ones normally expected to go for more. My guess is that each of the very expensive Red Hindu commons, if/when another comes out, will go for significantly less.

I would think the T206 collector's would have a pretty good idea of whom would be trying to assemble a complete T206 matrix. Thus the buyer would be fairly apparent. Perhaps I am wrong?

SB1 you are correct...If you pay attention to these boards you can certainly narrow the list down quite a bit. And I agree with Leon, when and if these cards are for sale again in my lifetime they likely will sell for less money.

I find it slightly strange that people are talking about "pissing away" money for certain cards. It's not just one person that wanted it that badly. It takes 2 to bid it up there. I agree that if they sell again in the near future, they would likely sell for less because you are taking one bidder out of the equation. But who's to say another wouldn't take their place?
I for one am happy that there are people passionate about cards. I also like the fact that you cannot value everything on past sales. This is what makes auctions fun. For non-collectors, spending $500 on a card is insane. So, drawing the "sensible" line at your own personal limit seems arbitrary. |

I'm not knocking for considering or discussing market value. Obviously that's a valid discussion and this is a message board. What I think is silly is the comments of "wasting" and "pissing" that go along with it. It colors the argument and also I think limits the discussion. Would someone who bid on those cards come on and discuss their position after reading that? So, you really only limit the discussion to the one side.

Someone is "pissing away" money when a card reaches a certain level. Yet had the underbidder been the high bidder and bought the card at the next lower increment of the "pissing away" bid, he'd be congratulated on a great pickup.

its a perfectly valid statement.. as the winner of these cards (murphy, Seymour).. will never recoup the money they spent on the card... The card is worth 3K.. maybe 4K because its a 1 of 1... as I like to consider myself an expert on t206 prices... I think I know exactly what im talking about... $31K for a t206 red hindu in PSA 2 condition.. is a case of 2 people putting value aside... and just going for a card... if/when the card gets resold... or another is found and put up for sale... it will not hit even $5K..

Rob...
if the under bidder on the murphy had won the card for $29K... I don't think one person would be saying that he got the card for a good price..

I feel pretty sure whoever was bidding on the Murphy didn't care about resale value, only securing the card for their collection.

Agreed. But if that person was from the board and posted that he got the card for that price, no one would post that he pissed away money.

What that Murphy did was set a price point for a 1/1 with a rare back. That will now be used as a benchmark when discussing 1/1 with rare backs. Whether or not the card hits that high water mark again, prices of 1/1s have been crazy high. Unconfirmed Piedmonts go for 10x market value so why shouldn't unconfirmed rare backs?
But that aside, my point was on the editorial comments, not the facts. |

Some people are running out of time faster than money... waiting for another probably wasn't an option.
I also wouldn't knock a guy for being in a place where money isn't an issue. I don't know who bought these cards, but it's safe to say they probably don't care about resell value. -Matt Last edited by Matthew H; 12-02-2012 at 03:41 PM. |

no ofcourse we wouldn't be saying that because hes a board member and were all friends for the most part on the board...
all im saying is if I had won the Seymour I would be the first to say that I just wasted $10K plus to get a card that I wanted...
