Default I need help identifying a stamp on the back of my card.

Posted By: Scott Senter

Hello all. I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the history of this stamp. I was speaking with a friend who seems to have memory of seeing this stamp on other vintage cards. He mentioned that it was always the same size and color. I was wondering if the card came from a certain collection, and if the person who marked their cards with this rather curious figure was known in the hobby for doing so. I'm sure most of you noticed this in Lew Lipset's last auction, and yes it is the same card. Any information would be greatly appreciated, and I thank you in advance. Scott

Just another to add to the known universe of cards with the bear, but don't know who or why

There is an old time collector dealer that I became friends with over the past few years.

He has a few cards with a 'bear' stamped on the back.

The story behind the bear?
According to this collector - Teddy Roosevelt (or his office) stamped the back of the cards with the bear as part of a political promotion.

I'm not saying this is one of those bear cards - or if that story is accurate - but that is what I heard.

I believe the collector is being honest... or at least believes his explanation to be accurate.

Wow Joe, That's great stuff! I really appreciate the lead. I will continue to research this and will certainly share my findings with the board. Thank you, Scott
