Zach RiceI recently acquired a B&W T209 of Cooper, Wilmington. Immediately, what struck me was how similar the background was to that seen behind Wilson players in the same set (see Hearne scan). Upon closer examination, Cooper is also most definitely wearing a Wilson uniform (see McGeehan scan). Through looking at other T209 Cooper cards, I have found this odd collaboration on all of them.
I have arrived at two scenarios to better understand this card:
1.The player, Cooper, played for Wilson and had his photo taken with the team. Shortly after, yet still before the release of the second series, Cooper was traded to Wilmington and the team name was simply corrected on his card.
2.This combination of player and team was a mistake done at the factory. Cooper wasn’t traded to Wilmington before these cards were issued; the makers of the card made a mistake.
Unfortunately, I don’t have too many resources to turn to when researching this topic. I would love to hear other T209 collectors’ thoughts on this issue. If it was scenario 1, is this the only occurrence of this in the set? Same for if the second scenario applies.
Best,
Zach Rice
