I've been getting my cards graded by PSA for many, many years. Yet, I'm not certain of the answer to this question, so I wanted to pose it to everyone to get a clearer understanding.

I'm under the impression that if you have a card that would grade PSA 8(OC), you can request "no qualifiers", and it would come back a PSA 6 instead. Does that have to be done before (raw) or after (already graded PSA 8 OC)? As well, if I have a PSA 3(MK) card and I want it graded with no qualifiers, will they re-grade it a straight PSA 2 for me? I've got several (MK) cards that I'd rather have as lower grades but without the qualifier. What is the skinny on this?

I have seen this response on these boards, but it is from more than three years ago,so I was unsure of its validity.

"The only qualifier PSA puts on a "1" is "MK", they will put the "MK" qualifier on any card w/ a pen/pencil mark or if the mark has been erased. Even if a submitter states, no qualifiers on the submission, they will knock down the "OC" - "PD" or "ST" to the lowest grade that it can tolerate. But a card w/ a mark on it cannot be lowered down, its just listed w/ an "MK" qualifier be it a 1 or up to a 9."

I don't know you might ask Jim C., he is the PSA guy. I do know I had a PSA 4MK sent to SGC and it came back a 10

Not always, a card could have 8 corners and all the rest but if the centering is what a 5 or 4 would tolerate you could get that grade as well.


Depending on the card at times I prefer the 8 OC grade.

MK will always get the MK qualifier from what I have seen.


Also even if you ask for no qualifiers (OC) chances are that they will still give them out.


My last sub had cards graded both ways (I did not request it) some got 8 OC while others were net graded down,
a few to as low as PSA 4

Bob, hopefully Jim will chime in here. I think you've got the old wives tale backwards. I think a PSA 9(mk) was sent back with a request for no qualifiers and it came back a PSA 4 straight. But that is beside the point. What is PSA's policy?

You try that twice and see if you get the same response both times. (You likely won't.) I'm hoping for real information. Not like when someone says I'm looking for a 1933 Goudey Ruth and someone replies "try eBay" It may sound like they are trying to help, but they aren't.

The answer needs to come from PSA. I am sure many here have experiences with the scenario you posed. What are ya gonna due after you rely on something someone here tells you and PSA does not grade the cards accordingly? Tell them that so and so from Net 54 told you to submit this way?

Always learn to go to the source if really you want to resolve something. You can apply this in many aspects of your life.
