Photo Taking Tips?

Any tips for taking photos? Optimal camera settings, lighting, angle, etc.. I'm having trouble taking pictures of larger items(cdv's, photos) that can't be scanned, especially things that have a glossy finish or that have a slight curl to them. They just don't seem to look right. Any advice would be appreciated.
