Once again, I hate outing an auction, but this is a bit incredible! Obviously, if a card's condition is your thing, this one's not for you. My question(s): How, when, and WHY did this happen? The two pieces fit together PERFECTLY, like a jigsaw puzzle. Wouldn't there be at least some fraying of the torn sections had this occurred ages ago? And if the damage was recent, why!!? Seller also indicates the card is skinned, which would, imo, cause the torn areas to be even more fragile. Or is this just a big ass scam? Tearing it in two would be such a crazy stunt, that it couldn't possibly be deliberate? Maybe that's the "sheer" genius of it!

Do you really hate outing auctions? I ask because I've noticed several outings in recent days. Did you contact the seller? what did he say? Will Hays doesn't usually engage in the sort of scams that you describe.

Actually, this is only the second time that I've ever asked about an ongoing auction. I have no experience with this particular seller, although I have seen his handle many times and did feel that there was a good chance this was legit. Just wanted the board's opinion on such a whacky listing.

It's real. It appears to be skinned. Will Hays is as reputable as they come. As far as outing the auction I figure it's listed properly on ebay so it's no big secret, however this does draw a little more attention to it.

My biggest laugh -- and not just reserved for this auction -- is how the book value is often stated: in this case "NM $2,500." If a card is ripped in two pieces, what the heck does NM have to do with it. I have a lot of "if onlys" for my own cards...if only the corners weren't shot, if only there wasn't a hole in the card...etc.

Still draws attention to cards from the periphery and has the potential to raise bid prices. It's the "Hey, that IS an interesting auction, maybe I should bid" crowd that you risk bringing into an auction.

This is an interesting issue - on the one side I certainly can agree with the last several posters who point out this draws extra attention to a listing and might be a conflict of interest. However, I think it's helpful to have a place to discuss ongoing listings - both on ebay and through the other auction houses. I think the benefits could be bringing attention to an interesting listing (like the "Bid") to those who don't hawkishly watch ebay or discussing the merits of a lot (like the "Game Used" bat thread posted last week).

I can assure everyone that I have no stock in this auction (or any auction, for that matter). I simply wanted some opinions from folks in-the-know before I decided whether or not to bid. Normally, I always make my own decision on that front. Its just that I have never seen damage of such severe proportions on a really important card before. Well, maybe I have, but this just seemed nuts! The theory of this occurring while being removed from an album - and recently - is probably sound. Thanks for your attention.

The only time "outing" drives me nuts is when a card appears in the wrong classification and flies under the radar. Since I rarely take the time to do the "deep searching" necessary, there's only been once or twice that I have had a bargain outed this way.

I wonder if the grading company would encase it seeing as how if they are not affixed to anything, there is a likelihood that in the plastic case, one of the halves would slide and cover over the other.

The "card" had great photo quality for a McPhee, which are more often than not found with light images. I think someone could reback this into one piece again if they knew what they were doing, but 1400 is a lot of cabbage to drop for a card in this shape.

It boggles my mind that collectors base such expensive decisions on the often biased or ill-informed whims of Hall of Fame voters ... is Bid McPhee really a legitimate HOFer? Was he really better than dozens of players collectors care little about because they're not enshrined in Cooperstown?
