Default Cards in the Philippines ?

Posted By: leon

One of our board members, mainly a lurker but the person I got my N167 Ewing from, is in the Philippines for another month. Does anyone know if there are any places to look for cards over there? Or is he SOL? (poop out of luck)...He emailed me this morning saying hi and I told him I would ask the board...I have never been there personally...

Leon,

Seriously, I doubt that there are any sports cards shops over there. First, look at the economy of scales. The US has a lot of extra cash to spend on that stuff. Over there most of the people survive and some do better than others but I wouldn't exactly call collecting American sports memorabilia a huge past time over there. There are a few places over there that might be westernized (Makati comes to mind) but I don't recall seeing anything like that over there. I wont say it's an impossibility but the likelihood of running into something over there (vintage) is probably remote at best. Sure, lots of Americans have been there but look at the overall environment, if somebody brought stuff there 50 years ago it would have had to have been preserved in an overall humid climate. Possible - Yes, Probable - No.

Leon

I actually lived in the Philippines for quite a while in 1995-96. I used to go to all sorts of outdoor markets where people were selling older stuff but all I ever saw were old coins. I was able to get many turn of the century Silver Coins for about $4 each in American Currency but the entire time there I NEVER saw a single baseball card. I lived on Luzon Island in the Northern part but also spent short times in manila as well. If he does find anything he better be prepared to bargain for it. Feel free to give my e mail address to the person who is over there if they want to ask any questions.

It isn't even safe for an American to go browsing there unless you have an escort. I doubt if there are any early vintage cards there at all. There is a coin counterfeiting ring there that used to sell on eBay and they specialize in early foreign and American silver. What they do have are rare 78rpm records that were only distributed in the Philippines and they go for a bundle (Elvis, etc.)
I own some real estate and two large homes in Bacolod.
