I noticed 1 of my Old Judge cards has part of the advertising on the top of the card, probably from the bottom of another Old Judge. Is this common? |

Joe--This is not common but it happens. Is the whole ad piece from the bottom of another card at the top of yours or just a small portion? Please post an image. I think people would enjoy seeing this cutting error. |

Yes--thyere's so much space between the cards on each sheet--it would be highly unusual. |

As Jay, I, and others have shared, it is well known that the Old Judge cards originate from 24 image/card uncut sheets arranged in a 6 x 4 matrix. If not careful when cutting into 24 individual cards, it was quite possible for Goodwin & Co. to cut into the neighboring card. We sometimes see very large Old Judge borders with no evidence of the neighboring card such as the Gruber below. This can easily be explained as a card that was on the perimeter of the uncut sheet (in the case of Gruber, a bottom row card). Other times, such as with the Mack, the large border catches the neighboring card. The Gypsy Queen (JCs I believe) shows the neighboring card to the side. |

Thanks, some good information here. I don't think a scan would show much, but the card is Hanlon. I had to use magnification to see, but you can see the very bottom of an "R", the bottom of "K" and the period that is after New York on the cards. Not dramatic but the printing is there. Joe G. your card shows more printing than mine. |

For the record, none of those cards are mine. I was under bidder on the Gruber card (recent Superior auction) and the Mack was auctioned by Lew Lipset a couple years ago with Dave Levin winning it. Dave has since sold it. It is not too difficult to find cards such as those attached to this thread. |
