Someone has been removing 'gems'...and doing a search found these 'beauties'.

A MINT (guaranteed to be authentic) T206 Eddie Plank. Seller also has 'nice' Cobb CJ, DiMaggio Head's Up, Mick Rook.

How is it you are able to tell these are fakes from the scans? I know the card is exceptionally rare, but what do you look for to discern these reproductions? I have a hard time judging from scans. Also, what about 52 and 51 Mantles'? They seem to be a constant scam on E-bay. Thanks.

The P in Phila and the A in Amer should be bigger than the rest of the letters. The word Amer is way to thick. Just my observations. I'm sure there is more signs that I dont know about. Anyone care to help on this. Out

"How is it you are able to tell these are fakes from the scans?"...jw how else are you suppose to tell if the card is fake besides the discription and feedback etc. a scan is the easiest way to tell if a card is fake. A seller has a mint condition plank t206 with 0 feedback....I think not. Also not trying to go hard on you "deleted" but if you can not tell that these cards are fake I would suggest looking at other t206s on ebay or the web and comparing the two this will help you see whats wrong with it also it will help stop you from possibly buying a reprint in the future. Also this may help you ~http://t206museum.com/page/forgery.html

Zach,

Thanks for the link. It was very helpful. I have been out of cards for a long time, and I have only recently gotten back involved. Needless to say, I didn't know there was a whole market out there of fakes and people who specialize in near perfect reproductions.

There are very few pre-war issues that have "near perfect" fakes, especially the color lithographs which no advanced collector would be fooled by.

If you collect these issues already and have a 10x, you should have no problem spotting reprints or forgeries. If you are starting vintage issues you haven't dealt with in the past, it is only common sense to begin with low-grade commons before moving to expensive cards. If you choose to do otherwise you are the exact type of person the scammers are looking for, and you have too much extra money laying around and won't mind being separated from it.

Scott, I think you are right. I have been the one scammers are looking for. I fell for some crap story from a guy that led me to believe he had anything I could want. No wonder he had everything, I'm guessing that most were fakes. I will have to get me a 10X, immediately. Thanks

If you were a non-card collector with a lot of dough, and had an Old Judge Cap Anson sitting on your mantle in a nice little display, impressing your guests for years, then found out that it might be a forgery, what would you do? Answer - you would rationalize why it was real and leave it be. Same goes for the autographed Ruth baseball sitting next to it.

Cap Anson? Funny you mention that. He did sell me one of those, and, yes I have displayed it to friends. Now, I'm really embarrassed.

It's also about common sense.

A PSA4 Plank (from les famous Monsieur X Collection) sold on eBay for $41K and PSA5 Plank sold a while back for $55K. This is easily an '8' or a '9'. How much do you think this thing could fetch? $250K? $500K? $750? $1M? The sky is the limit these days.

Bidding starts at $250.

It's like bidding $2K on a brand new loaded Porsche and getting in the mail a steering wheel to a Ford Tempo.
