This was advertised as a 1936 Goudey Premium. I am sure that the 1936 card is a portrait shot. So, what is this one? Thanks.

I know it says R314, but I believe that is incorrect. I thought this was his R314 card:

The 2004 edition of the SCD Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards lists Al Simmons as being in the set once and, in fact, shows Simmons' "portrait" card as a sample card from the set. Several players, however, have more than one card in the set. For example, "Schoolboy" Rowe has a "portrait" card and a "pitching" card. The listing describing the 1936 R314 set in the SCD says "It is possible other poses or players may yet be reported." So, in my opinion, it is possible that both cards are from the 1936 R314 set. When looking at the two links above, both cards certainly look like they belong in the 1936 R314 set. You could measure the "batting" card of Al Simmons when it arrives in your mailbox and see if the dimensions are that of other 1936 R314 cards, which according to the SCD should measure 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches.

I was just talking with a fellow collector who told me that the Canadian version was a creamy paper version and did have some different poses without the litho in usa line. It may be a canadian version. just guessing though.

It is the Canadian version. I've bid on that same card twice and lost both times. The Canadian set has quite a few players that are not present in the US set (Dimaggio, Feller, Doerr), and several pose changes (including Simmons and Appling). It is catalogued as a 1936 set, but the presence of Doerr means it couldn't have been issued before 1937.

I've been studying these 1936 R314 sets for a while now, and have just been writing an article for Old Cardboard on the subject. Anyone who has significant holdings or interest in these cards, contact me so I can get a list of "experts" going.

I can also answer specific questions about them, or identify scans, if anyone wants me to--

Cheers,

Tim
