I've wanted this photo since I first seen it 10 years ago in The Glory of Their Times. I figured it had been destroyed or was in a collection not to be seen again. It's a picture of Joe Wood on the Ness City, Kansas team when he was 16 years old. It's hard to photograph as it's in it's original frame. The paper backing was removed where a photographers stamp can be seen. Joe is seated on the far right.

I've also included a postcard of Joe Wood with the Hutchinson Salt Packers team in 1907. Joe is third from the right. This was the first item I bought that was Kansas related and started me down this path. Joe is in the top row, third from the right.

I'm really overwhelmed to own such a great piece of historical Kansas baseball as well as something that belonged to Joe Wood himself. As a Kansas baseball historian it just doesn't get any better than this.

Congrats Clint...we can't see the first photo...I think you need to edit and separate your smiley face from the URL. I figured you would be going after some of the Joe Wood stuff in the Hunt's auction.

Dan, that photo came from Hunt's along with two others. The photo is still in the frame and I can't photograph it where it's clear. Here is a different photo that was sold in the internet auction, it's clearer.

Hunt's Auction just had a nice group of old "Smokey" Joe Wood items in the last auction. Many of the items were from his estate, nice early item!

Those are really super pics. I especially like the first team photo. On a related note, about 7 or 8 years ago I picked a couple of Smokey Joe's pics on Evilbay, one of him pitching and another of him on a fishing trip with someone not identified in the photo. They were part of a larger lot. I love old photos, even though I don't really collect them, especially those from the 30's and earlier.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. Joe Wood items are very difficult to locate, even his cards are not that easy to find.

John, would love to see those photos if you still have them.

Barry, I bought my card about 10 years ago. I was going to bid on your card but this Walter Johnson postcard was sold at the same time and I could only afford one.

Unfortunately, almost all my collection is, at present, in storage, pending a move sometime in the near future. When I have access to the pics again, I'll be happy to send some scans.

Joe- Thanks, I really am excited to acquire this photo and the other two also. I know how you felt when you bought the 1903 Giants postcard. You were wanting to trade me the Giants postcard for the Johnson weren't you?

I have to hang onto it because there's another Kansan on it.

I don't know why... but I think it is one of the coolest Big Train photos (if not the coolest).

Mike, as much as I like that Wichita card I can't bring myself to trade either Johnson for it. Your Wichita card is exceptional and I hope that I might find another sometime. I do know that there is another Johnson/Brennan postcard out there. My postcard originated from a friend of Walter Johnson and the other postcard came from Walter Johnson. Bob McCann sold it back in 2000.
