Autographed T-206 Cards

I recently picked up these four Marquard autographs on ebay. I can't believe I bought all four, but I had never seen an autographed t-206 card, let alone one of a Hall of Famer, so I thought how many more of these are really going to come on the market? Well, after I bought 2 -- the worse condition ones -- the seller sold two more. So, by that time, I really had no choice but to get those as well. (He'll probably sell two more in better condition next week!) I figure someone had a private signing session with Marquard before he died, and brought all the T-206 cards of him that they could get with them. The same seller also sold some HOF plaque cards with Marquard's signature. Anyway, does anybody have any autographed t-206 cards that they would like to show scans of? I'm curious if anyone out there collects pre-war autographs on pre-war cards. It's an interesting niche...

I'm familiar with the collecting area (autographed Pre-War cards), and think it's a fine genre. Signed Pre-WWI cards can be found but are limited. T206s are about the most common, signed E cards are tough. Signed Old Judges, good luck. Signed later cards, like Goudeys and Play Balls, are much more available. Even in the old days, baseball cards were a common item to get signed, both in person and through the mail.

I have seen signed T206s of Ty Cobb, Eddie Cicotte, Cy Young and Nap Lajoie(? may just be imagining that one), with the cards typically good to fair. The famous autograph collector Jeff Morey got a T206 signed by Cobb is a coffee shop or restauraunt, and it's possible that one or more of your Marquards came from Morey's collection. In general, even signed T206s are limited in number and it's a special event to own one.

I am NOT an autograph expert.
However, I can't help but think back to a few of my visits to a card and comic store called Fantazia back in 1990.
Dr Danny Dupcek was one of the owners.
What stands out in my mind was when I spotted a couple of autographed T206 that were in his case.
I had started collecting T206's in 1982 and it was the first time that I saw an autographed one.
This of course was before I found out that Danny had some very creative genes.
If you haven't done so already, I would suggest to have them checked out by an auto expert.

I've found their autograph personnel to be pretty careful on tough, valuable or obscure autographs. They have a deal with Jim Spence to review their stuff, I think.

Those T206's are great; wanna sell one?

I have collected autographed cards for years, first getting them signed by various old codgers at shows or through mail order private signings, then buying them on the secondary market. It is a great way to take a nice looking vg card and turn it into something really special.

I've got the following prewar cards:

1933 Goudey: Billy Herman, Chas. Gehringer

I've also got a bunch of players from 1950's and 1960's sets, including the following:

1961 Scoops: Joe DiMaggio
1939-47 Salutations Exhibits: Luke Appling, Lou Boudreau

I've also gotten some really great boxing cards that were autographed: Benny Leonard (PC), Roy Jones Jr., Emanuel Steward (in person), Lennon Lewis (in person), Billy Conn, Willie Pep, Dana Rosenblatt, Lew Tendler, Tony Canzoneri, Jack Dempsey, Max Schmeling (still alive, BTW)

Nice cards. I have several auto'd pre-war cards including some T206s, Cracker Jacks, Goudeys and the like. I have a Marquard as well. Have been collecting auto's cards for nearly thirty years and if you do some digging they are more readily available than you think. I have some dupes if you would be interested in trading one of your Marquard dupes.

Adam, I was just giving my factual experience with a situation.
I'm not questioning PSA/DNA's intent.
However, if you go over your quote, it leaves us with some questions.
1. Is some of it based on an assumption?
2. Is the PSA/DNA label, an automatic COA by Jimmy Spence?
3. Would Jim have a loose connection with PSA/DNA, or any slab company for that matter, that might jeopardize his reputation if someone else goof's?
4. If he does have a loose connection, can he be held accountable if something goes wrong?

I think Jim is smarter than that, at least I hope so.

Adam, with all due respect, the above takes by me, are just my thoughts and opinion.

BTW T206collector, I would love to see the scan, or item numbers to those four auctions.

A PSA/DNA certified baseball card would have been looked at by either Spence or Steve Grad. Spence is an employee of PSA/DNA. After coming to terms with Spence, Collector's Universe bought his indepenant company (and all it's autographs) and Spence became their sports autograph expert. Grad had owned an in-person autograph company (gained the signatures in person) that was bought out by MastroNet. Grad became a autograph examiner with Mike Gutierrez at MastroNet, with many previous years MastroNet LOAs being signed by Grad. Grad then left to work for PSA/DNA and Mike Gutierrez is associated with GAI.

The info I posted re PSA/DNA was based on a conversation I had with Steve Grad at a show. My experience with it was as follows:

I submitted a number of autographs, some obscure, some prominent, at a show where PSA/DNA was accepting submissions. Steve Grad reviewed them on the spot. He certified two of them as genuine (Ted Kluszewski and Walter Payton) on the spot; I guess they were easy, but I'd never gotten either before so I had no idea (Klu I purchased for the card for my set w/o a premium on the auto, then decided to find out if the auto was the real deal; I got the Payton through the mail some years before he died and had no idea if it was real, but post-mortem prices being what they are, felt it might behoove me to ask that question). The other card I submitted (a boxing autograph) Grad felt was out of his expertise and he indicated that it would have to be sent to Spence for review. Spence rejected the autograph for lack of exemplars to review. So, my conclusions were (1) Spence worked for them and (2) they were pretty conscientious about certifying autographs. I felt the experience was quite apart from the norm at PSA on basic card submissions, which I won't use them for. I'd not hesitate to use them again on the autograph front, and probably will for some other tougher autographed cards I've got that have crept up in value.

BTW, I recently saw a bunch of autographed 3x5 cards slabbed by PSA/DNA and certified. Does anyone have any experience with this type of service from them and what are the details (e.g., cost, turn time, etc.)?

I have submitted a number of cards which I have had in my collection for a long period of time. These included auto'd Goudeys of Ott, Hafey, Frisch and Diamond Stars of Medwick and Cochrane as well as some newer football including Simpson and Payton. In each case the cards were very comparable to other signatures I have including GPCs, cuts and index cards. Also I submitted a '60 Fleer Home Run Baker that I felt was close but questionable. The Baker came back as unable to be authenticated but the others were certified. I have bought from Spence for many years and consider him to be an impartial source for authentication. I have been very pleased with the experience of using PSA/DNA.
