Default Greg Morris Marketplace closing

Just saw this note while logging into GregMorrisMarketplace:

Notice: Auctions on our website will be halted as of May 20. Visit our eBay store for future listings: eBay Store

Anyone here using the marketplace? I've had several orders and found it to be pretty user-friendly and great for building sets.

I guess there wasn't enough $$ in it to have that site going in addition to their eBay sales.

Interesting. I guess the costs of running their off-eBay marketplace were just too much to justify keeping it going. I thought I heard at one point that they were planning to migrate away from eBay, but maybe they realized that wasn’t going to work as well as they hoped.

It could be taken as a compelling testament as to how absolutely boring and uninteresting 1960s and '70s baseball set-breaks are.

As much as there are problems here and there, it's hard to beat eBay's platform, reliability, and reach.

Anything is possible.

At the same time, there are a lot of big dealers who also sell through their own website. Deans, 707, 4SharpCorners, just to name a few. Hard to imagine that eBay is squeezing all of them to give up their websites.

But maybe GM was different in some way. Was GM also running auctions on their site? Or just fixed price stuff?

GM was running daily set break auctions on their own site just like what they were running on eBay.

I have had one experience with the Marketplace site, so this observation is clearly more anecdote than data. But, I bid on and won several 1967 Topps high numbers at a price well below what they would have realized on the GM EBay page. If that has been the experience more broadly, I would speculate that the profits realized by both Greg Morris Cards and their consigners made the Marketplace a losing proposition.

Definitely seems like GM gets nice prices on eBay, and it probably doesn’t take much in the way of fewer eyeballs for their website to struggle to reach those same heights. So not really surprised at your experience, and would guess that this was a common outcome at their site.
