Default Gretzy Record Broken - SO Do You

Invest in Ovechkin Rookies or Gretzky is still the GOAT or what -

Never bought a hockey card in my life - but have the urge to do just that for some reason right now

I'd go Gretzky. From an ESPN article a few days ago, he is still BY FAR the NHL all-times points leader:

Wayne Gretzky, 2,857 (894 goals + 1,963 assists)

Jaromir Jagr, 1,921 (766 goals + 1,155 assists)

Mark Messier, 1,887 (694 goals + 1,193 assists)

Gordie Howe, 1,850 (801 goals + 1,049 assists)

Ron Francis, 1,798 (549 goals + 1,249 assists)

Marcel Dionne, 1,771 (731 goals + 1,040 assists)

Steve Yzerman, 1,755 (692 goals + 1,063 assists)

Mario Lemieux, 1,723 (690 goals + 1,033 assists)

Sidney Crosby, 1,682 (622 goals + 1,060 assists)

Joe Sakic, 1,641 (625 goals + 1,016 assists)

Alex Ovechkin, 1,619 (895 goals + 724 assists)

Default Gretzky

Between the two, Gretzky all the way. The "GOAT" debate in hockey revolves
around Gretzky/Howe/Orr, and I don't see Ovechkin being granted a place at
that table. In terms of cards only, Ovechkin's suffer from the "shiny stuff only"
stigma too. Given the parameters of the question, Gretzky.

Great accomplishment and great player but in the end, so what. Ovechkin is nowhere near the discussion of the best all time hockey player. Gretzky, Orr, Howe, Lemieux, Richard, Crosby, all obviously higher, and arguably others too. Note that Jagr came close but Gretzky STILL has more assists than anyone else has points. Insane.

Impressive that Ovechkin actually has more goals than assists.
Also - counting postseason - Gretzky still has more goals, more cups and is married to Janet.

Ovechkin is a Goal Scoring Machine but at the end of the day, Gretzky has more assists then Ovechkin has points, and it will likely still be that way when Ovechkin retires.

I think Ovechkin occupies a stratus somewhere between Bobby and Brett Hull. Bobby Hull would probably have had remarkably similar offensive stats to Ovechkin (in an era of goons and mostly legal boarding), if he hadn't taken that 7 year sabbatical in the WHA.

Sidney Crosby probably has a better chance then Ovechkin at this point, to at least eclipse Gretzky's assist total in the total points category. Jagr came oh...so...close.

Gretzky is The Great One...

Ovechkin is the great 8...

Alex is a an all time great but not even close.

I had A signed rookie Of Ovechkin but his friendship with Putin just left a bad taste in my mouth. So after Ukraine invasion I sold it. No regrets.
