Default April Pickup Thread

For the second time in a couple of weeks, I was happily able to really eff up the past sales data sites by grabbing a card for a fraction of what it is clearly 'worth,' and I'm (as we used to say) incredibly psyched!!!

Last month, it was getting a 1962 Topps 'Green Tint' Ruth for a third of what multiple recent versions went for, and as April was ready to dawn, a consignor somewhere got fooled* (see what I did there?)
as I was able to steal this extremely rare 1971 Fleer Update #73 (from Good Humor trucks in 1978, highlighting the unforgettable 1975 World Series) for less than what PSA 8s cost, and for significantly less than what PSA 9s traditionally go for...

pickups1971fleer73redsoxreds.jpg

*The auction ended at an odd day and time, so my assumption is it flew far beneath the radar of many interested collectors.

Nice card! I haven't seen that one before!

Picking up on the 70s theme, I just picked this up -- the best first baseman in the history of the game, regrettably not in a Mets uniform, but thankfully with that pornstar mustache.

I'm confused. How can a 1971 Fleer Update card highlight the 1975 World Series? And did the Good Humor trucks prowling your neighbourhood typically sell Baseball and other cards?

So a package arrived yesterday with 14 Topps 1955 Baseball cards including these:

Is the tremendous variance of back stock from nearly white to cream to beige simply due to heat and moisture related toning or did Topps actually use different card stock printing these on different days?

Plus 26 Topps 1957 Baseball cards including these:

Here's an enlarged Robert Laughlin SCD ad from 3/15/79, with some basic info about the update from the previous year (1978)...

SCD3.15.79.laughlinad-WSupdate.jpg

Info on the actual release is really tough to find.
I still don't know if packs of Fleer cards (with the updated ones inside) were sold by Good Humor trucks, or if only the seven new updates were somehow distributed by them?
Don't have definitive answers, so the ad is but a partial glimpse into the marketing efforts that summer.

Interesting. That makes me curious as to whether Robert Laughlin had ever seen a photo of Roberto Clemente.

Grand Theft Ernie!!

Ran into this 1968 Topps #355 Banks I need when it was first listed and the price told me to immediately grab it without wasting time seeking out comps...and it was the right move.
Crazy beauty and centering aside ("Yesterday's 10 is today's 7"), the $60 price was a case of extreme (new word) theftery...

Default A Long awaited beauty!!

It's been so long since I've even seen a 59 cream back Mantle, I had forgotten I was still looking for one!! There are only a total of 53 graded 1959 Venezuelan Mantle examples between PSA and SGC combined - and that includes BOTH gray and Cream backs. While neither grading company differentiates, those who collect are well aware of the monstrous difference in supply of the cream backs. I think it's been 10+ years since I've seen one available. While this one has multiple creases and is fairly graded a 1, The centering and eye appeal are off the charts! So excited to add this bad boy to my small but quality Venezuelan PC.

I am accepting select private consignments of quality vintage cards (raw or graded) and collecting "want" lists for higher end ($1K+) vintage cards.

Speaking of which, how much more common are the U.S. Topps grey backed cards #199-286 than the cream backed cards #199-286?

I haven't heard that there is a large difference in supply of those, but do not know for sure.

Noice!

I bought one of those inadvertently off eBay probably more than 20 years ago, thinking it was just a regular '59 Mantle in lower grade. Paid $50 something. It arrived and I noticed "Impreso en Venezuela" and I sold it a month or so later for $500 something.

I don't recall whether it was a white or gray back.

Default April Pickup Thread

Technically a March pickup; finally arrived from eBay authentication yesterday. Now goes nicely along with my PSA 3 partial diamond.

An aside; I’m not usually a centering freak by any means - but certain issues where lettering or “design elements” (such as this logo) are super close by layout to borders - and I think centering becomes more important than normal. ‘55 Topps is a good example of this, as is 1954 (Banks name miscut prevalence…) and 1963 (with that team and position lettering on the full bleed border down at the bottom).

For what it is worth, I am VERY happy with the centering on this card.

Recent arrival of what I believe to be a severely undervalued card.

Beautiful Bench, Dean!

I haven't bought a card since the fall, but I'm still here celebrating everyone's acquisitions. The Kaline I got a while ago, and is an upgrade for me. The Mays is my kind of card. Wrinkle in the top left kept the grade down, but it's a beauty.

Thanks Ian.

Beautiful cards Ian. That Mays is spectacular. Love low grade high eye appeal cards.
