Default Homemade? Luke Appling and Ray Scarborough Playing Cards

Hi-

Has anyone seen cards that look like these? I am guessing they are homemade but I figured I would check. The surfaces of each are smooth so the images were not pasted to the cardboard. Based on the playing careers of both I am guessing these date to the mid to late 1940s. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Alan

Never seen them before and I think you are spot on in your analysis. Cool cards!

They appear to be cutouts from some larger piece, don't they? Whatever that piece was, the quality would point to a professional job.

Whoever hand cut these did a respectable job, too.

Look at me, an autograph guy, and I completely glossed over the fact that these have "signatures" on them. While obviously period, they're not authentic, JSYK. Apparently signed by the same person, too--compare the very unique formation of the "g" in both Appling and Scarborough.

BTW, these look familiar and I feel like I've already posted a similar reply about them in the past.

Thank you both! I bought them at an antique store in New Hampshire last month. It is possible that the dealer who sold them or someone else posted about these before. I also appreciate the autograph analysis as I figured they were printed on the cards but I did not consider that they were written by the same person (but I see what you mean). I really appreciate both of your thoughts on these cards.

No problem, Alan.

This is how Ray signed in '48. Just a beautiful autograph with fluidity.
