Since the beginning of time, I have been a card guy, almost exclusively pre-War and late 40's and 50's vintage and have always sought out cards that I thought were good value for their grades. But, however, over the last few years, my pick-ups at auctions has dropped markedly primarily due to soaring prices, even at relatively lower grades. Thus, currently I have focused more on HOF autographs and Type I photos in order to stay collecting.
I wonder if others are remodeling their collections. |

I am staying the course on type cards but the Ruths, Cobbs, Jacksons etc.. are out of the picture. Still enjoying it even at a, mostly, lower cost collection. And of course, lower cost is relative, everyone's different.
These (shown before, several times) were a little more than my usual threshold. They are in CSG holders now. ![]() .

Not sure I would call it fenced in.
But definitely taking a hard look at priorities and trying to exercise more discipline in my approach to allocating my finite resources.

I've been a "what's left on the list?" collector since a bit over a decade ago and I'm done with any "what can I upgrade?" concerns unless a crazy deal rolls up. Even lower graded stuff I'm happy to call a done deal because I'm personally happy with the card.
That's made the late-2019-current price bumps mostly harmless, but I have decided to make some "well, not getting any cheaper any time soon" purchases. The ability during the "COVID bump era" to get rid of a slew of graded junk wax that's been sitting around since the early 2000s practically not worth trying to sell...well, that helped a lot. I also had some other collected-to-sell-later stuff finally cash in, especially Jim Kaat and Billy Wagner RCs most recently. In a way good and bad met in the middle, but overall I'm still not comfortable spending $100-$150 on cards that I felt were too much at $50-75 less than a decade ago. |
