Default My 52 mantle cert number used in counterfeit

What does PSA usually do when a certification number is used by counterfeiters? I tried to make copy of the cert on my 52 Mantle and it came up as deactivated because my number was used for fake Mantles.. I have had the card in the vault since 2010. I assume someone found it advertised at one time for sale and recorded the cert.

I called PSA and they are getting back to me. Sounds like I will have to send the card in for them to either reholder or verify the card as legit and activate the number. This my first experience with someone pirating my cert number.

I suspect they would give you a new cert, reactivating it would only create opportunity for the known fraudster.

Thanks Peter. What a pain to have to send this card in. I know it is genuine but now I have to have PSA examine it to show it it a legit card. The lesson I guess is never show your cert number to anyone. I never did but it was a buy it now on EBay in 2010.

It sounds like just one of those unfortunate things but it will work out. At least you didn't buy the fake, I guess.

Even if you don't show the cert number, it's in PSA's database to pull from. But yes, recalling both cards is how PSA usually determines the fake.

Every once in a while, PSA deems them both authentic and "accurately" graded, and puts them both in new slabs. However, I think the cards I'm recalling they claimed were submitted at the same in the same order, and were accidentally printed with duplicate cert numbers. Not sure how true that can be; just seems like their QC stages would notice two high value cards with the same cert number in the same order, but they've whiffed on plenty of obvious things in the past.

I am literally going through this process right now. I had posted my 1986 Fleer Jordan for sale and someone mentioned that the cert was flagged for being “counterfeit”, which caused the cert to be deactivated. I opened a case within PSA and they got back to me within a few days and provided me with a FEDEX label (up to 175k insurance) to ship it to them.

Officially its called a CRC-Brand Protection review. Assuming it is a legitimate card, which I am certain it is, they will reholder it and provide it with a new cert.

The following happened to a guy I helped a few years back.

He won a Ryan PSA 9 in a Beckett/Goodwin auction. I forget how exactly, but when he consigned it later, it was discovered that the identical cert was associated with another (legit) Ryan 9 graded perhaps a decade before. His obviously was a Mexican fake/overgrade, and indeed other cards had been pulled from the same auction.

After much back and forth with Beckett and PSA, it was agreed that Beckett would refund him provided PSA verified the slab was indeed not legit. So he sent the card to PSA.

Lo and behold, PSA reholdered the card and gave it a new cert number. No explanation.

It was obvious from the circumstances, not from the card or slab itself. Thus, Copperfield's success over the years. He put very large numbers of these into the market. There was a publicized story a few years back about the arrest of one of his "mules" from Denver, forget his name now.

Interesting discussion in this thread particularly between MW1 and Ergoism.

I had a card that I finally entered into the registry and it came up as already in someone else’s registry. Found out that card had been sold by an auction house for a large sum of money. The PSA app could not scan the bar code in the picture used for that listing but it had the same number as mine. My bar code scanned correctly. Had to send my card into PSA to get a new number as the old one got deactivated. Always scan the bar codes! Much harder to fake those.

What is frustrating is even checking the cert does not guarantee authenticity. I know that PSA can only say a card was graded with the cert but makes no guarantee that the number was not used on fake holders. While I am 99% sure my card is authentic it does give me doubt and worry until PSA checks it.Has not left my possession since 2010.Thanks for the responses and to Nate for telling me what PSA will do.

Default Counterfeiting my cert for 52 Mantle

After several back and forth emails with PSA they have given me the option to personally drop off the 52 Mantle or mail it. I know mine is the genuine one based on numerous tests of authenticity including a loupe, light tests and label inspection. So I guess I can just wait until I want to sell it which may be never or jusr wait until I attend a National and have PSA look at it. It does not sound like they would give me a new cert number just reactivate it. No way will I mail it and risk losing it.They offered me insurance but still not anxious to send it.

I get the discomfort level, but if it goes both ways by registered mail the odds of it being lost are essentially zero.

Yes I get that but since I know it is genuine I am reluctant to take any risks of PSA handling the card. All they will do is remove the temporary deactivation and take detailed scans of my card in case my cert is used again for counterfeits. So I might just wait until I attend a National where they will inspect it and hand it back to me.My real concern was mine might be a counterfeit but after pulling it from the safe deposit box and examining it with a loupe it is real.It is interesting that it took 14 years for someone to use the cert number.
