I have noticed that quite a few SGC slabbed cards with a JSA cert are not in either data base. I have attached one example of many. Does anyone know why that is and can verify that they are legit? Thx in advance

They are legit. Spence authenticated for SGC before they started authenticating themselves. These were authenticated many years ago. Not sure why they dropped them from the data base but they did away with their registry so anything is game for them.

Yes, slab and flip are legit. When they went to the new owners and gosgc.com site, they seemed to lose all their knowledge of which cards were autographed. Many were listed in the new pop report as just Authentic cards.
That was around the same time they stopped certifying after-market autos since they got duped by the T206 forger so badly.

The information in the first response isn't entirely correct. JSA partnered with SGC for slabbed items for its first few years of being in existence, as they didn't (and still don't) have slabbing equipment of their own. Spence didn't authenticate/work for SGC. Later, they did the same thing with Beckett prior to Beckett forming their own autograph authentication division. And of course, SGC also had such a division for a time after the partnership with JSA ceased.
It's confounding that JSA still hasn't been bothered developing a slab of their own. Seems like they're just steering huge piles of money to their competitors as a result. Last edited by BillyCoxDodgers3B; 10-15-2023 at 04:09 AM. |

I thought SGC lost all the info regarding their older certs which this card is.

Some theorized that they went to the new cert number style so you could no longer figure out who submitted that card for grading, since most of the people determining trimmed cards were doing it by using the order number and then looking up how many in an order were trimmed and how those were sold out into the marketplace. If it wasn't for that reason, it just happened to be awfully convenient, that when a bright light was shone on their incompetence, they got less transparent. However, their DB still sucked the last couple of times I tried to use it. Very spotty.

He told me a year or so ago that he was looking at a slabbing service for JSA but so far it has not come to fruition. |

JSA / He has been stating that for years. Why would you slab something when they're raking in ridiculous amounts of $$$$$$ with just a table at a show? They make so much money that all slabs would do is cause headache in their cash flow.

They did start grading autographs a few years ago to compete on that front with the others so it is reasonable to assume slabbing would be the next foray into increased business. Who knows if it will ever actually happen but I am betting that it does someday in the not too distant future. |

If they did start slabbing, then there is the decision as to how far they will go (or not go) in authenticating what is signed. If they just did "trading card" for cards, does that imply authenticity? Do they put "reprint card" if appropriate, but then have to take on the responsibility of knowing how to spot good fakes?
And then you have photos and whatever else, things where the ultimate value may depend on what is signed, as much as the authenticity of the signature. Does seem like a headache they probably don't want. |

About 2 years ago they told me they own the equipment but it would be a few months away. The backlog of people with stickers wanting slabs would be unimaginable
