Default Shipping expensive cards on eBay

Hi All,

I was wondering what everyone does for shipping when they sell items that are pricey on eBay. For example say a card is sold for $1,000 and you don’t want to send it via USPS. The only other option I see on there is FedEx but I don’t know what levels are insured and what are not. Thank you in advance!

I use USPS. If you have it, use private insurance and whatever method the policy requires. FedEx insurance specifically limits sports cards to $1k value regardless of how much you purchase: "F. Shipments (packages or freight) containing all or part of the following items are limited to a maximum declared value of US$1,000:...11. Collector’s items such as coins, stamps, sports cards, souvenirs, and memorabilia." (https://www.fedex.com/content/dam/fe...Guide_2023.pdf). Remember the shipment also is going to have to go their Authenticity Guarantee representative which may limit other options.

That’s a great point, I forgot it is going to the Authenticator first. Thank you for the recommendations!

You said that if I have it use private insurance. How do I do that? Can I sign up for it while creating the listing?

By private insurance I'm referring to a 3rd party policy such as through https://collectinsure.com/ or through your homeowners (check your personal policy to see if it is applicable). This would be completely independent of Ebay and the listing.

I put them in a USPS small flat rate box with zero added insurance and mail them. Just done it with a card worth a little over $2k.

I self insure. I have saved way more than that by never adding insurance and yes it would suck to lose one but even if I did I would still be ahead cash overall.

Registered mail with USPS is max at 25k insurance value. The only upside I see with the ebay authentication process is that once it hits them, you are covered to that point. A better option avoiding buyers who say the card was never delivered or not what they paid for.

These are all really great points. Thank you all very much! I’ll probably just do the USPS route then because the authentication process means they will retake that step out of it going to the buyer.

In the future I’ll do something with my insurance policy but not for just one card . I’ll have to look into that further.

Thank you all again!
