Default 1964 Topps Set - $12.95 Postage Paid

I was recently thumbing through a 1964 copy of Sport Magazine and came upon this advertisement. Wow - I’ll take a couple sets!

I get weak in the knees when I see these older ads. I was only 4 then and had no idea about many things. But oh how I wish time travel was a thing.....

Thanks for sharing.

Why worry about shipping? That price included the shipping!

I think that was what I paid for my 1972 set back in 1972. Dealer shipped in series. Maybe 5 (or 4) shipments? Series 1, 2, 3, 4-5, and 6-7 (or something like that). Not sure what shipping was, but I know the entire thing was under $20 shipped.

P.S. I ordered it prior to the Topps release that year. And yes, I STILL went out and bought packs anyway. LOL

P.P.S. I still have the set.

Not sure what you mean by that, Yes, and Yes (meaning that the cards were pack-fresh, but some would need an OC qualifier with modern grading). It was through and ad in the back of The Sporting News. My guess is he built them from vending cases.

Back around 1978 I bought a mint condition 1967 set for $35.
No...I don't have it any more.

My dad did the same thing. Ordered a 1972 set, but also bought a ton of packs, so he has 1100+ duplicates.

He kept it unopened until I opened it up last year. Unfortunately, it's not NM. Most of the cards are good, but some have some problems, and some of the checklists are marked.

The first set I collected was 1978 - bought tons, but still needed a handful. My father got a Yankees scorebook/magazine, and inside was an add from Renata Galasso for a complete mint set for 14.95 - it took me a while to convince mom to let me spend the money - I had to assure that since this was the COMPLETE set, I wouldn't need to buy any more packs! That was a sweet set when it came. I got a 1977 set from Galasso about a couple years later for maybe 16 bucks.

I've done some research where I consult old issues of The Sporting News and there are adds each year from about the mid-50s on up offering individual series for 3 bucks or so, or full sets for 10-12. Think of all the Mantles, the rookies - Rose, Seaver, Ryan - and all the high numbers and SPs that could be had mint from vending for pennies.

Must've been nice.

Back in the early 1970's I decided to complete the 1960's sets I collected as a kid.

Looking at my 1966 cards, I realized I only had 5 cards from the 7th series. So I bought the entire 7th series for $12.95. A tough decision since that was big money at the time.

I bought the 1967 series with Mantle. I traded it for a 1978 set. DOH!

Default “Popular Cards” = Premium Prices

Thanks for sharing the price sheet for the various 1960s Topps sets. It’s interesting to see some of the cards that are listed as “popular” — and therefore demand a premium price. Some of the head-scratchers include: Glenn Beckert, Roy McMillan, Del Crandall, Wilbur Wood and Smokey Burgess.

I realize that some of them were on All Star teams in their day, but it’s kinda humorous to see them grouped together as “popular cards” along with Yaz, Banks, Killebrew, Robinson, Kaline, Marichal, Stargell, McCovey, etc.

And how ‘bout that — Bob Eucker is listed among the popular kids in the 1964 set!
