Question for any coin collectors out there. . . .
Ever since I was a kid I always wanted to own a nice 1909 VDB-S penny. Just seemed like a real cool coin to have. See them at Heritage not infrequently. What do you think about this coin for appreciation? I haven't followed coins in many years. I know stamps (which I used to collect) haven't amounted to a whole lot over the years. Have these appreciated? More room to run? Obviously just looking for anyone's informed opinion. Thanks. |

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you as I don't think there's any way to predict future values of coins, or cards for that matter.
But, I have the S-VDB as well as lots of other coins that I have enjoyed collecting over the years. My advice: if you want the coin and can afford it, you should buy it. You might consider one slabbed and graded by a reputable company as AU58. Decent condition without paying mint state prices. Also, I suspect you might do better price-wise buying on eBay vs. an auction house. I suspect there are plenty listed all the time by reputable sellers. |

For investment purposes I would suggest buying the absolute highest grade PCGS coin you can afford/find, preferably full Red or Red/Brown. If you just want a nice one to enjoy and is readily liquid I would go with a graded AU 55/58. I would stay away from lower MS grades 60-63, tougher to sell these than the nice AU or the 64's on up.

Many ebay sellers have websites and will sell directly for less.

Thanks everyone. Much appreciated.
Been a long time since I dabbled in coins. Like 3 decades. Before I buy anything I need to educate myself more on grades and grading companies. This is a great start. |
