With the other thread bemoaning/discussing the latest inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, how about posting some cool play lists you've assembled or just some old, forgotten songs that you love hearing...but other people may not know or remember. Could be a nice opportunity for people to discover some sweet tunes that they aren't familiar with.
I'll start with a playlist put together expressly to play (and loudly sing along to) while zooming down the highway. A bunch of the songs are obviously well known classics ("Old Days" even mentions baseball cards), but there are a bunch of hidden gems here, too, especially the ones kicking it off: Run Runaway - Slade Tired Of Toein' The Line - Rocky Burnette Ride The Night Away - Jimmy Barnes You Keep Runnin' Away - 38 Special Already Gone - The Eagles Second Hand News - Fleetwood Mac Since You Been Gone - Rainbow Do Ya - ELO Break It Down Again - Tears For Fears Nothing But the Wheel - Peter Wolf Ain't Wastin' Time No More - The Allman Brothers What Is Life - George Harrison Old Days - Chicago Death Or Glory - The Clash Rock And Roll Girls - John Fogerty I'll Drink To You - Duke Jupiter Pump It Up - Elvis Costello Teacher Teacher - Rockpile Animals Medley - David Johansen

Your post gave me some soul. Namely, mentioning The Yardbirds sent me to their tune, "Heart Full of Soul," and from there I segued into "Soul Deep" by The Box Tops. Good stuff!!

"Heart Full of Soul" is another great Yardbirds hit. I think they are among the most underappreciated and forgotten 1960's bands. Being that they evolved into Led Zeppelin, and featured Clapton, Beck, and Page, they should have gotten a little more respect.

‘Look beneath your lid some morning, and see those things you didn’t quite consume, the worlds a can for your fresh garbage. Fre-e-e-e-esh garbage!’ That’s one songs complete lyrics I will have seared in my head for the rest of my life, mainly because there aren’t much lyrics to remember.

Reading your list reminded me I had not heard one of my old favorites for a very long time. Went to YouTube and found it live. Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsBwBct0_5U

Hi Richard,
My apologies but I lost track of this thread and just saw your post today. Great clip, thank you. I saw the Chambers Brothers perform this live in 1967 at the Village Theatre, and can still picture it in my mind's eye (six months later, the Village Theatre was renamed the Fillmore East). Cliff- Fresh Garbage was a great song, but there was another song on the same album that became headline news a year or two ago. It was called Taurus, and a riff on that song is almost identical to the opening of Stairway to Heaven. And it was on that basis that the surviving members of Spirit (Randy California is deceased) sued Led Zeppelin for stealing it. Both bands toured together in 1969, so there really was some basis for the lawsuit. Of course Spirit lost their case, but if you listen to Taurus you will hear how remarkably close it is to Stairway. |

I went with a couple of friends and we were sitting nearest the stage. It was great. There were maybe 40-50 people there.

The Chambers Brothers will be playing at the 2019 Lockin' Festival in Arrington, VA on Friday, August 23. They will be playing with MoonAlice. MoonAlice was originally a rotating group of musicians. I saw them in a 200 person club in Arlington, VA. At the time the lineup included G.E. Smith (Saturday Night Live band leader, ex Mr. Gilda Radner), Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) and Pete Sears (Jefferson Airplane, Rod Stewart, John Lee Hooker). The band is now Sears along with 3 other musicians. They were known from the beginning as a band that created a concert poster for every single show. They were similar to Fillmore posters, printed on about 18x24 cardstock and were free. They were the first band to twittercast a concert and they have live streamed almost every concert since 2010.

Peter Tork of The Monkees died yesterday, so allow me to share a story. In the summer of 1967, I took a tour around the country, traveling with kids my age mostly by bus and train. Sometime in August we landed in Houston, and since this was a kind of an upscale trip, we checked into the Shamrock Hilton Hotel.
Also staying there at the same time were the Monkees, as they were on tour and had a concert in Houston the next night. I remember seeing the band roaming around the lobby, as well as Mickey Dolenz lounging by the pool. Our group was able to see that concert, and what I best remember was they could play well enough and sing well enough despite not really being a true rock band. It was a fun concert and a great memory. Rock trivia: When the Monkees tour began in July, for the first few weeks they had a relatively unknown trio open for them. This was a band who had to date a little traction in England, but were pretty much new in the States. Their name was the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Last edited by barrysloate; 02-22-2019 at 05:53 AM. |
