Very recent pick up. I would venture to guess there are even earlier business cards from this company? It is approximately 4 1/4" x 2 3/4", on heavy cardboard stock. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance - collector of obscure stuff ![]()

Leon, sorry I don’t know how to put the thread cite here, but there is an old thread entitled How to make a baseball, which is about Harwood if interested.
Very cool card, love the balls are named for the major teams. |

Here is an early Atlantic model baseball by an unknown manufacturer, likely produced around the same time as the card. Several manufacturers offered Atlantic models, so there is no way to make a persuasive attribution to Harwood.
It’s my guess that the use of ‘Atlantic’ borrowed something from ball maker Harvey Ross’s reputation, as Ross was a member of the Atlantic Club. |

REA sold a matching example dated the same year, minus the additional reverse stamp.
It realized $3,770.00 in 2005. |

Leon, I've seen that one before and it might be the earliest. At least, I have not seen an earlier one all these years.
It is one of the nicer early baseball ephemera items I've seen. Last edited by drcy; 08-12-2018 at 11:24 AM. |

I’ve seen an 1875 trade card with a price list from Harwood, but none earlier than your 1871 example.

Unfortunately upon closer inspection with a black light this item turned out to be a replica. The purple over stamp was a nice touch, I must say.
It was returned for a full refund. Such is life. Caveat Emptor....

What did the black light show you?

It lit up like a christmas tree. Very bright. I also had some Goudeys with white backgrounds next to it, they didn't look the same under the blacklight. They didn't light up.

Sorry to hear about it Leon but glad you got confirmation and refund. I had a similar experience from the same seller and he also provided me with a full refund. The item I purchased looked fine until I looked at it under magnification and black light and also consulted with one of our resident experts.
