Does anyone have any idea why PSA grades 1949 Leaf Baseball cards with a 1948 date?
I sent in a couple of 1949 Leaf cards to be graded. My submission form clearly stated "1949" for these cards, and the back of both cards have "Copyright 1949" printed on them. Yet, I received both cards back with the 1948 date. In searching through eBay, I realized that this is not an error or an isolated incident, it's simply what PSA does. Again, I scratch my head and wonder why. As a side note, I noticed that SCG uses "1948-49" regardless of whether the copyright date is 1948 or 1949, and Beckett uses the (apparently correct) year that corresponds with the copyright date. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

If the cards are exactly the same and there is no drastic value difference between the two, Psa will not recognize minor changes as a new set. They don't worry about brand backs or factories on T205 like they started doing on T206 a few years ago. If there are already a lot of people with registry sets for the Iissue, I would expect them to not want to upset them.

PSA puts 1948 on the flips but their set registry is titled 1948-49 which matches the standard catalogue. Keep in mind that the year designation is one made by collectors after the fact. At the time they were "All Star Baseball Bubble Gum", not 1948 All-Stars. I did a quick eBay search and didn't see a prominent year on a wrapper until 76 Topps. Anyone know of an earlier?

PSA probably doesn't do this with that set because it would anger collectors, but I have some cards they've graded that are labeled 1988-1992 on the flip because the exact same card was printed over several years.
I've also had a case where they were labeling once set for me with a certain year and then on another submission they labeled it with a different year. I complained because I want consistency in my collection and they corrected it to the year they'd given me previously. I don't know if it was actually an error on their part or if the set was made over two years. |
