Obscure E (Early Candy & Gum) cards.....Circa 1932 and earlier
One of the categories our founding father, Jefferson Burdick, knew would be expanded upon was E (Early Candy & Gum) cards, issued approximately 1932 and earlier. The 1929 Leader Novelty cards seem to be one series he could have denoted as an E card. There are many others not categorized too. Anyone have any Leader Novelty or other uncategorized E type cards to share? It's always fun to see some scarce, early candy cards....

I wonder how you make a sucker "sanitary"? I wonder who can add to the official list of issues? I've never seen that back before.

1929 Leader Novelty....
Here's the Lefty Grove Leader Novelty card. I bought this sight unseen out of the Sports Collector's Digest from a seller in New York (Bob?) who didn't know what it was at the time. He called it a small 1929 R316 or Kashin Publication, but knew it wasn't that. I would love to get some other color variations of the Grove card, but have not had any luck to date.

1910 E-UNC Wagner
Only 4 players from this mysterious "Blue Caption" set. This is the single action pose of the 4 players, as the others are portraits, and one of only two Wagner's...

Candy cards.
These obscure candy cards are hindering the completion of my George Gibson player collection.
Gotta say, I really do like the cards though. Still have never seen the J=K Gibson. Anyone have one to share?

1930 Fleer Whiz Bang
I have some from the original Fleer Whiz Bang find....always wanted to finish the full set including actors. There are a couple of 1 of 1's, so likely won't make it. There aren't too many of these baseball players either. I don't have access to my photo's currently but this is what they look like.

Brad, here's my Leader Novelty of lefty Grove. It appears to me to be the same color as yours. FYI, I just gave it to Al C. of LOTG for his next auction.

Tom is correct, the E241 set is a "mixed subject" set including the 60 baseball players from W515 and 60 other subjects including Presidents, Actors, and Wild West subjects (hence the 120 subjects on back of the cards). In my opinion as tough as the baseball players are the non-sports subjects are harder to find...
Here is a Ulysses S. Grant and Whitey Witt from the E241 set...

Leon, your card looks more like a 1928 Fro-joy card than a 1928 George Ruth Candy card to me.

That isn't the first time I have made that mistake. I know better, or at least i should, since I have probably handled at least 50 - 100 of each. .

Denny,
I bought the Leader group a number of years ago (6-8?). Don't think the seller was a collector - thought he found a group in a scrapbook - so don't think it was ever graded. |
